help....car wont start with IAC disconnected......

I am trying to follow the guidelines for adjusting my idle, and I get as far as disconnecting the IAC and then trying to start......and nothing. It acts like it wants to but wont run. The Chiltons book says to disconnect the jumper from the ALDL before starting but the guidelines on here dont say to. I have tried it both ways and the same result. I just put my motor back in my car after 6 years and trying to fine tune it.

Please help if possible.

Thanks

Open the throttle blades with the adjustment screw first. They're closed too much and not allowing in enough air. Definitely remove the jumper from the ALDL before you start the engine.

Re: help....car wont start with IAC disconnected......

About how much should I open them? Do I open them up, start the car , and then close them to adjust the idle? I also found an article that said to adjust the idle with the car in drive, is this true? Also what should the idle be set to with a modified engine? I have added a bigger cam, S/R torquers, headers, etc. All help would be greatly appreciated. I am supposed to be doing a dyno run this weekend and need to get this tuned.

I dont have any idea what settings will work best for your engine, since I dont have any specs on it. Every engine is different and there is no universal setting for all modified engines. If you have a stock chip, the computer will try to get it to idle around 650. If that isnt high enough to make your engine happy, the car will stall. You'll need to get a custom chip burned to raise the idle, as opening the throttle blades is just a band-aid.
Turn the screw a few turns to open the throttle blades, then try to start the car. If it doesnt start, turn the screw some more, and try again. Repeat until the engine starts and holds an idle. Then back the screw down a bit until just before the engine tries to stall. Then shut it off, replace the IAC plug, and try to start it again. If it wont start, then you'll have to start over and open the throttle blades a bit more, and try again.
