starting troubles

87 iroc. 305 tpi. i have to give it gas to start. but as soon as i let off the gas it dies out. i ran it for about 5 minutes and it still died when i let off the gas. i checked my trouble codes and didnt get any codes at all. other than the 12. i just remembered the last couple of weeks there was a few times when i had to give it gas to start but then it ran after that. i have also had a miss lately. found a broken plug wire and a few days after i changed that it started again. dunno if that would have anything to do with it. any suggestions? and hopefully a way to temporarily bypass the sensor that is causing this until next friday? thanks in advance.

Really it could be any number of things but I would start by checking the IAC! I unhooked my IAC one day and when I hooked it back up I didn't get the connections seated well and when I started the car I let off the gas and it died.....continued to do this and I unhooked the IAC again and hooked it back up and it then did fine! Another thing you might have tested is your ignition module! The local parts store should test it for free so it's always good to have it checked "just in case"....plus it's a cheap part if that's what the problem is!!

Soon to upgrade to a 383 stroker w/TPI, Hedman Shorty Headers, 64cc Pocket Ported Worlds Product Sportsman-II heads, ported intake, comp cam, TPI air foil, Adjustable Fuel Pressure Regulator, possibly bigger injectors!
Current project: Keeping my car running until I get the money for the above mentioned project! :-)

IAC=Idle Air Control
Most likely your cause as stated above. My mothers van was like that until I changed her IAC valve. Its really simple to change, grab a haynes manual. part was $40 for her van though.

Since I had a problem with this and read up on it later I think it may be your ignition control module in the distributor. If it goes bad the car may not even start! Else you could have starting problems, bad idle and intermittent starting problems as the car gets hotter.
This is and electronic part placed in a very hot area and when electronics is put in hot areas they tend to good bad over a period of years. Just like your O2 sensor and everyone saying to replace it every 50,000 miles I think you should change the ignition control module every 30,000 miles. It is just good maintance!
And the worse thing about it?
It will never through a code! NEVER!

But it is just my .02
Best of Luck!

SC, try this, unplug your MAF and then try to start it, if she starts (she may run a bit rich and rough) w/o help, it is probably one of your MAF relays.

i was playing around today unhooking connectors and hooking them back up and running it for a few minutes and after about 10 minutes i took my foor off the gas and it still ran. let it run for about 10 more minutes then tried putting it in gear and shutting it off and it seemed to be working ok again. im gonna try again in a few hours since we got a few inches of snow im stuck pretty good so i cant take it for a drive. still not sure what was wrong. next weekend its getting a total tune up. planning on changing a few sensors, ignition control module, pickup coil, wires plugs cap rotor. im sure i will fix whatever it is. everything suggested is getting changed. i thank you all for your help. if it starts to do it again before next weekend do you think it would hurt to just turn up the idle screw?
