Not sure how your car works, but you VSS would either be off the tranny where the speedo cable would normally attach. What you need is the VSS buffer which produces the signal you need for the ECM. It could be on the back of your gauge cluster as well. Look for a bright yellow or light green box about 2 inches by 3 inches by 1/2 thick.
If your car had cruise control, it will have a VSS somewhere. If not, and it was carb, then no VSS. If you do have cruise, then follow that wiring harness, it will lead you to the VSS buffer which is where you want to tap the signal from.
If you don't hook up the VSS you will get some odd drivability problems. Like when you come to a stop it may want to stall. Usually with out it you have to take the park neutral input and short it to ground so the ECM thinks the tranny is in park all the time. If you can hook up the VSS, it makes for better drivability.
If you have a wiring diagram for you car, you might be able to find the VSS easier.
Mark.
