Best new ET----not what I wanted though
Best new ET----not what I wanted though
Hey guys, went to the track last night and eventhough I broke my own record, I'm not very happy with it. Here are the numbers:
Run 1 Run 2
1.95--60Ft 1.92--60Ft
13.42 sec--1/4 13.39 sec--1/4
102.81MPH 102.50MPH
Run 3 Run 4
2.06--60Ft 2.06--60Ft
13.42 sec--1/4 13.48 sec--1/4
103.16MPH 102.66MPH
Run 5 Run 6
2.01--60Ft 1.94--60Ft
13.45 sec--1/4 13.42 sec--1/4
102.73MPH 102.38MPH
As you can see, the car ran very consistent; all runs were within less than a tenth of a second. I wanted to run a 13.30 or better, but I think conditions didn't permit it. For one, I still have the timing set up at 9*. The ECM might be taking some out, thus killing power. Fuel pressure was at 50psi on the first 2 runs, then I bumped it to 52psi with no effect. Last and most detrimental of all was the freaking wind. We had winds of 10-15MPH and gusting to 25MPH, worst of all, It was blowing right against us. I can honestly say that this prevented me from running at least one tenth faster. But oh well, I make no excuses; I said I was gonna run 13.30 or better and I will. Sooner or later (with the same combo of course, just more tuning)
C-ya later, Rick
ps: There were 3 Vipers at the track, a GTS and 2 R/T's. Bro, were they running fast! They all ran 12.40s

Did you try lowering your fuel pressure to see if your engine would like less fuel?
As for the knock sensor, I am finding that adjusting the knock sensor's "attack" and especially the "decay" rates give the greatest effect. (Is your eprom stock or aftermarket btw)?
I find that by lowering the "attack" rate and increaseing the "decay" rate, you get more effective total spark. Having 35* of total advance and having the ecm pull out 12* is not as good as having 32* and having only 3* pulled out.
Also, I find that with the stock "decay" rate, it is so slow that if you encounter "knock retard" at 2,600 rpm, it can "linger" all the way through your acceleration through the power band.
Those tricks of desensitizing the knock sensor are not necessarily effective or the best thing to do either. I find "inside" the eprom is the best place to deal with it.

I didn't lower the fuel pressure, but I should've. Next time I go I will definately do that. As far as what you were talking about the knock retard, I think I get the message. Correct me if I'm wrong; what you said was it is better to be modest with the timing and have the ECM pull little or not timing out THAN be too agressive and risk the ECM pulling a whole lot of timing out. As far as the knock sensor, I really don't feel the need to mess with it.
ODB, yeah, I'm ready for the big leagues....you wanna race me?
As far as the Vipers go and you little bit of sarcasm, I have seen Top Fuels running 4s. That is fast, THE FASTEST so far in the whole world. I know there is people running better than those Vipers, but when you consider 12.40 on a bone stock Viper with only 1300 miles, I think that pretty good. I don't remember any F-body ever running that fast, but then again, I'm on crack!

Raptor, what all do you have done to your car? Those are some decent times.

SuperIroc, The vipers' MPH was 111-112. Not bad huh?
Bob, I have everything you have, plus ported SLP runners, Hi-Flo base, 58mm TB (which definately killed power a bit), CompCams camshaft and 2100 RPM torque converter. As you can see there is not much difference as far as ET from your car to my car, however, what's really holding me back are the bone stock iron heads (except for springs). Headers are also holding back (crappy Hedman headers with super restrictive edelbrock Y pipe[have cuout though]), but not as bad as the heads.
By the way, the 3 Vipers were own by the same family. Lousy millionares!

not to bad but i went 12.7@111mph at a track that is half a second slower then any good track.I have a 355 with SR and TFW heads and mild cam. I think with some more practice i can hit 114 at my track and hopefully a little more at e-town NJ in march.
Hey SuperIroc,
who you like the trick flow heads? What part number are they? Did they give you a considerable amount of HP? How about reliability; any rpoblems at all? Everybody seems to have AFR heads.
Thanks, Rick

Hey rick, I couldnt make it up there. It was to cold and windy to ride my friends bike. I just got a new set of nitto drag radials for my car. They are alot shorter than my slicks I had that night. And now I finally have the money to buy my speed pro. If you get the prom burning stuff let me know. I put together a v8 s10 that im putting all my old tpi stuff on, may need to burn chips for it.
Im also having comp cams grind me a special cam as we speak. The specs they chose are kind of interesting. They say that modified efi cars respond a whole lot different than the cams in the book for carb cars.

I love these heads i had them with the factory tpi all stock and it ran 14 flat for a year then i put the Super ram and base intake on and injectors tb etc and the car woke up 12.7@111. they have been excellent no probs and i only run a real mild cam. The AFR are good but i live in an area where any type of performance in non existant around here a loud exhaust and chip is all you need for a 500hp car, so i never see anything else or anyone who knows anything. I would like to do a comparison on the trick flow wedge heads vs the afr 190s on a 350 or 383 i think it would be close. Part# tfs-31500002 these are the g2 witch are the same as mine but they know have stronger springs in them hence "G2" so you can run a bigger cam, just bolt them on and go. I would suggest the SR or MR and cam at the same time and you have a solid 12 second car potential.
I see you have an intake and slp runners so your car would probably be pretty fast with just the heads. I know i will make some people mad but i think a SR or MR is a must, get rid of that tpi setup if you can if you want to spank ls-1 or lt-1 all day long. I paid $700 for my SR and considering runners are anywhere from 350-450 its realy not much more money for a much better design. I also have hedman LT headers and 3.5 mufflex exhaust this makes for a killer exhaust and maximizes performance gains. I believe compatibility/matched parts are the key to a fast combination.

Yes, it was really windy and kinda cold....the wind was making it feel real cold. I won't be buying the hardware and software for PROM burning right away, but hopefully soon.

The 60ft times are not that inconsistent for a car that has no suspension mods whatsoever; not even aftermarket lower control arms....it's bone stock; although I did removed the sway bars and the car was also lowered. I had no slick, just BF Goodrich Comp T/A, which are just regular tires (unlike Drag Radials) and the gears are 3.54s, however, the tires are so tall (275-50-16) that they brought the ratio back down to the stock 3.27 (speedo is even right on the money)
SuperIroc,
I'm positive that if I had your heads I would certainly be running in the 12s. I think with those heads or AFR, 12.70 is very much possible, maybe even better. One thing I should improve is the Torque Converter. I just rebuilt my tranny and put a 2100-2200 rpm converter. I think someting closer to 3000 would be perfect for this engine, but then again, the conveter was only $120 ($10 back with old part).
As for the MR or SR, I hope 87Z-Ya gets sick of his MR and sells it to me for cheap money, in the mean time, I think I can put my very small car budget on other things that I really need, like new SLP headers, body work and paint or new heads (the latter is still quite a while away)

hey superiroc, everyone has a 400hp car atleast didn't ya know. i don't consider my car anything great but people must have misconception on what a fast car is if they thought mine was 400hp.
if you went to somewhere else besides beaver sh*t dragway you would definately be fast.
BTW, i would kill to have 60' times like that. that will be my goal when i go for my annual trip to the dragstrip!
if you went to somewhere else besides beaver sh*t dragway you would definately be fast.

Well, I don't think I have 400hp, I think I have something close to like 300-320hp. As far as the track goes, it's a bramd new track, but I don't think they prepped the track very well.
I am really honored if you were talking about my 60ft times. That alone made it all worthwhile.

Hey 355 do i know you i only get the beaver springs ounce and a while. There is someone else on this board that can atest to just how bad BSD is. Is your car TPI or carb i only know one guy done there with a 305tpi 5 speed runs prety good low 14s. the only thing ever there is slow 5.0s. Whats your car run at ****ty beaver springs?
I think the 60fts are about right for a auto car on hard radials. Thats about what my car used to do with the 700r4. Now A 5spd is a different matter.

superiroc, mine was the maroon iroc with gold pinstriping. it has a 355 TPI 5spd, used to have a 305. believe i talked to ya last year at the track for abit but i have never seen you car run. i have heard rumors that beaver sh*t dragway is goin to be paved.
F22, i wasn't saying people on this board think they have a 400hp (but i know some actually do) just people that generally live around central pa seem to think so. it just bothers the hell outta me when some punk *** 5.slow owner puts k&n with flowmasters and has 400hp (only in their own minds). that was the kinda mentallity people in my area have, im sure you knows what i mean superiroc.
and yes, i was directing the 60' comment your way. my best is 2.2 by some freak accident when my car semi hooked up in first. hopefully the new BFG's will help that

. That is right central PA has alot 5.0 slow mustangs with exhaust and kn making at least 400hp. I hope they do pave beaver. we should meet up there this spring. You can go the Beaver springs dragway homepage to see my times under Matt Barr in the 100mph club
yeah, i wouldn't mind goin to race a couple of times this year if i can. of course, with my other racing, drag racing is least on my racing schedule so i will probably miss the first few. i was thinkn of trying new media sometime since i heard that track was 10x's better then beaver sh*t.
oh yeah, if you schroll down to the bottom of the 100mph club, you will see my killer fast times (note the sarcasm).

i think new media is off I81 near wilkes barre, like 1 or 2 exits when i get off from I80 i believe. probably be a drive for you but i am about half in between the 2 tracks. I don't know if they have a website but i haven't looked either.
i have heard of the cars in york being pretty nice and fast but i live out in the middle of nowhere with only a few nice fast cars.
