5.0 and 5.7 distrubutors the same?

I would like to say hi all. My first post on this forum. The last 3 or 4 days I've been running searches and I can't believe all the info I have found. Anyhow I'm in the beginning stages of swapping a tpi motor in my jeep and remember reading somewhere that 5.0 and 5.7 hei units are different. If its true whats the differance in them? thanks ken

The newer "small cap" distributors are all the same. I don't think that the larger, older ones are different between 5.0 & 5.7 either.

There shouldn't be any diff. between the 2.

I'm pretty sure of the following:

85 and 86 TPI have a "big cap" (has coil in the top) which has 4 screws holding it to the distributor.

Any other 74-86 Chevy HEI is also big cap, but has L shaped hold downs that just hook around the distributor.

The 87-up's are all the small cap. SOS, DD....

Yea I finally called fuel injection. They said their was no differance between the two. Just makes me curious why they have different numbers on the base. Seems like I read somewhere that the differance is in the amount of curve for each one (5.0 and 5.7) I wish I could remember where I read that. later ken

the computer does the curve. but, it depends are you comparing the two distributers from the same car just one 305 other 350? some may just have diff. wire colors wich may have some thing to do with it.
