Code 42: Electronic Spark Timing - Could be a poor electrical connection or a short, a defective ignition module or bad ECM. My vote is for the ignition module going out. Are you having any bad driveability symptoms? The ignition module is very easy to replace, it's held down by two screws under the cap.

Well, whenever I get past 3k the rpms float around.

I thought the ignition module was under the distributor in the housing?

On mine I can get to it if I pull the cap and rotor ('90 350 TPI). The module is where the wire harness connects to the back of the distributor. Just make sure if you put in a new one to liberally apply that heat sink compound that comes with it or the new one will fry quickly.

Yeah, check the ECM. Get one from NAPA, they have a year warranty, where most others have 90 days

Okay, first, you didn't mentioned if you had any "drivability" problems. The tach deal can be just the tach acting up. Mine did that a while back and then replaced it. A code 42 will stick if you only disconneted the EST bypass wire to check timing without shorting the AB terms at the ALDL.

If a code 42 is all you're getting, your ECM is probably still good. Look into the module and pickup coil in that distributor and wiring therabouts.
