Airbox modification.

I have a 1991 trans am GTA ,I understand you can modify the stock airbox by cutting windows in the sides to increase airflow, but you need the top and bottom sealed, the airbox sides are ok to open up. I was wondering instead of cutting the airbox canister, why not remove it and just put the filter in where the canister use to be.The airbox top will just fit on the filter and seal the top.can anyone let me know if this is a safe alternitive instead of cutting the airbox. Thanks

Thats what I did, but I cut only half of it. I kept the back half so I wont suck in hot heat but I cut the front half off and rerivented the hold downs to the back so I was still able to hold the filter in place.

Forget all of that crap and replace all of it! I did mine and I can hear it sucking inside my car with the hood closed! Here's a pic
