How much power can i get out of a 305 TPI??

This question has probably come up before, but i'll ask it again anyways.. How much power can you get out of a 305 TPI? I'm looking for either a firstgen, or maybe another thirdgen TPI car.
I'd really like to get one with t-tops, and i doubt i'll find a 350 car with t-tops.
What are the stock horsepower/ET numbers, and what 'california-legal' mods can be done? Also, how much a power gain will result?

Thats alot of questions for one post but here goes.First,if you really want a 350 and T-tops,I suggest you keep looking, they are out there, especially in the IROCS.Go to the technical database at the beggining of this site to see all the horsepower ratings. The TPI rating are for the camaros only though. The Firebirds had 5hp less from 88-92 and 15 less in 87 in the 350 TPI.I'm not even going to get in the 305's ratings AS far as et times, their are many differences, but the 2 fastest is a 90-92 350 TPI auto 3.23 IROC/Z28,about a 14.4,and the 91-92 305 TPI with 3.42 5spd about a 14.6.There are tons of mods you can do to either engine, and a 305 TPI with the stock short block can have about 330+hp with a cam, heads, intake, and exhaust.

How much power can you get out of a 305 TPI? Ans: You can make as much horsepower as you want, as long as you have the money/time to do it. It also depends on what you are going to use it for.. Street daily driving, race only, combo of both... I could be running a second faster if I could dedicate my car to race only and strip the heck out of it...but I have to drive it to work, and want all my interior comforts.

If you are trying to just do basic bolt-on parts... start with a 350, not a 305. If you are not afraid of digging into your motor, and have the tools/workspace/time to do it...then you can make any motor perform at any level... but just to get the maximum out of shadetree mechanic bolt-ons, find an IROC / GTA with a 350 in it (dont worry about the 15hp difference, can be made up MANY ways). And t-tops are not all they are cracked up to be (opinions vary, but mine changed after I had them for 5 years).

I ran a best 15.1 @ 85.5. This is all stock, 205hp 305 TPI and 2.73s. Since then I've added flowmaster exhaust and can probably break into the high 14s. I need to run it at the track again to see how much the exhaust change improved my performance. Low end gears is a great mod. I plan to get some 3.73s in the spring. I should be running well into the 14s then. This 305 aint that bad.

85.5 is an awfully low trap speed to run and is indicative of an engine that isn't putting out as much power as it should be. Also, 15.1 and 85.5 mph do not correspond... check your timeslip again.

Cliff92Z,I agree with MrJ,something is severely limiting you topend power, you should be hitting 91-93mph.Then again your ET is a fairly good time for your car, that just doesnt sound right for a stock car with stock 2.73's.
