Re: Fuel pressure regulator making loud ticking?

Thanks again. I think you have helped out a whole lot of people. Please let us know how it goes if you try it on the return. Now that I know there is such a thing, I'll also keep others informed.

Re: Fuel pressure regulator making loud ticking?

I recently put in some new (used) Ford 19lb injectors in my 89 LB9, getting the loud ticking referred to here, When I put a long screwdriver to the fuel rails and regulator its the loudest, not valvetrain noise. I tried loosening the fuel rail bolts, stil ticking. You can hear it from 10 feet away.....It's not a single injector, coming equally loud from any place on the fuel rail. tried adjusting fuel pressure, no dice, started after new injectors, but I don' think its them. Ugh, driving me crazy, parked the car. Anybody else fixed this? pulling fuel rail and injectors tomorrow when i replace intake gaskets, will put it back together carefully , see what happens

Re: Fuel pressure regulator making loud ticking?

I know how you feel! I have over $2000 into this problem without a fix so don't feel lonely. On these engines the injectors all fire at once so the problem is that new injectors shut down so fast and so completely they cause a shock wave back to the pump. I haven't tried the pulsation dampener method yet as mentioned above, but think that may work.

Re: Fuel pressure regulator making loud ticking?

Well, that doesn't make me feel good I think its some kind of setup issue, I still have my old stock injectors, if i can't fix it , I'll put them back in to see, it didn't start happening till I swapped injectors, so either them or how i reinstalled everything. I'll let you know

Re: Fuel pressure regulator making loud ticking?

I had the same problem after going from the stock injectors to the ones from southbay. I put orings between the fuel rail and manifold and while that did reduce the ticking you could still hear it from outside the car with the hood down from far away. I noticed that with the hood down the sound was coming from the rear of the hood. I have an extra hood so when i looked it over I saw that it had a weatherstripping on the rear that my current hood does not. After putting it on the noise audible from outside the car is almost non existent.

Re: Fuel pressure regulator making loud ticking?

Do you guys still have the pulsator in the tank in the factory location or was it removed with a fuelpump upgrade?

Re: Fuel pressure regulator making loud ticking?

I don' t have a pulsator, just an intank pump to a filter to the motor. I didn't have the noise till after I swapped to Ford racing 19 Lb/hr injectors, I pulled the fuel rail and swapped them. I'm thinking some kind of issue with how the injectors mount or how I bolted the fuel rail back down. I went out today and loosened up the 4 fuel rail mounting bolts and the noise was still there. So on mine the only real change was injectors, seems weird they would be the cause. I ended up pulling the whole lower intake to clean it up and replace gaskets, will be a few days till its all back together. If its still real noisy, I'll swap in the OEM injectors and see what happens

Re: Fuel pressure regulator making loud ticking?

now my ticking is louder while driving it increases when i jump on the gas, gonna adjust the timing slightly and see if that helps but i just wondered if this could be the injectors or something in the intake cause it slowly started to happen after i installed the new injectors.

Re: Fuel pressure regulator making loud ticking?

Ok, I put my top end all back together, When I first put the ford 19 lb injectors in, I didn't put the little locks to hold them to the fuel rail, had loud ticking. When i put it all together this time, I took the locks off the OEm injectors and put them on the new ones, ticking went away. Other than r and ring the whole intake (replaced gaskets) this was the only change.. Only noise I hear now is my dying belt tensioner pulley Do you guys with the noise have the injector retainers installed? Might be a thing

Re: Fuel pressure regulator making loud ticking?

Thanks for the info. Yes I've tried both ways. With Bosh3 injectors you can't (shouldn't) use the locks. With stock multitec with locks it still ticks. I'm going to try some trick Flow disc injectors that are supposed to be quiet. will let all know when done.

Re: Fuel pressure regulator making loud ticking?

An update on this issue. Well, I found my problem and the solution to my loud injector noise. This may or may not help someone as it is quite unique. My car has braided steel lines running from tank to fuel rail. I was under the car pulling some slack out of the return line when I noticed that something did not look right. It rurns out that the uphostery guy that installed the seat belts had run a bolt too long and it almost completely pinched off the return. Now I know this will not apply to lots of you that have this problem but it may lead you in the correct direction. If the return is blocked or too small, it will cause loud ticking noise from the injectors. I have a pressure gauge on the fuel rail and it did not affect that and all appeared normal. So hopefully those that have this problem and find a fix, keep this updated in order to help others.

Re: Fuel pressure regulator making loud ticking?

I know this is an old thread, but I stumbled across it looking for help. I have an '86 442 with an '89 TPI out of a Vette. My car just started making this noise out of the blue. It has a BBK AFPR that I installed last year, and Bosche injectors that have been in for several years. my noise isn't terribly loud, but I can hear it slightly with the hood down.
I plan to drive the car on a three hour trip this weekend and was wondering if it will be a concern.
Thanks in advance,
David

Mine is doing the same thing but I believe it's the adjustable fuel regulater..when I took mine off a round aluminum circle plate came out ...I believe that piece was moving around in there

Re: Fuel pressure regulator making loud ticking?

That round disc does not flop around inside the regulator. It sits on top of the diaphragm and the screw pushes down on it when you want to adjust the pressure. What injectors do you have

Re: Fuel pressure regulator making loud ticking?

I got some South Bay injectors...and my car making that ticking...noise...went got a stethoscope...and it's coming from fuel regulator...when I took regulator out that round piece fell out...I believe that's what was making the noise in my car
