OIL ON PLUGS
OIL ON PLUGS
I was just giving a once over on my GTA and I noticed oil on a few of the plugs (Bosch Super). It never smokes, never smelled of burning oil, and oil comsumption is low. (Pennzoil 10w-30) I just sprayed some dry-solvent on them and wire brushed them clean stuck 'em back in and it runs fine. But I was jsut wondering if this is a sign of something bad about to happen or happening? I would guess valve seats, but they have less than 16,000 miles on new heads, what's up? Most of my driving is to and from work, (40 m.p.h. for 7 miles, no stop and go).
Should I switch to plugs to something more close to stock? (Like everyone runs A/C Delco) And I am going ot start running Valvoline Max Life. But I think that would only be a quick fix, any suggestions?
Thanks,
Chris

well oil on the plugs uselly means that the oil is getting past the piston rings.how many miles does the motor have on it?

If you have oil showing on all your plugs then I would suspect the rings may be allowing oil past or perhaps your valve seals are going. If your seals are going, usually you get the puff of blue at start up. Bad rings will usually blow blue when you accell or decell rapidly at highway speeds.
IF you only have a few plugs showing oil, you may have a leak at your intake that is allowing oil to be sucked into a few ports.
You may also have a PCV system that is plugged or not working. A non functioning PCV system can cause all sorts of oil problems (too much crankcase pressure).
You may wish to do a compression test on the engine. That should show you if your rings are weak.
Changing plugs will not solve your problem. Oil is there and by the sounds of it too much.
Check your PCV for proper operation. Check your intake bolts to see if they are tight. Look for the puff of blue at start up.
Good luck ...
Mark.
PS .. are you running synthetic oil? It seems like every car I see that switches to it develops a leak.

I will check the bolts and the PCV. The engine has been rebuilt about 17,000 mile ago. And oil is only on like 4 plugs. I hope that is all it is.
I DID run synthetic about a year ago. Castrol Syntec. I switched back to good old Pennzoil because my wifes car developed a tick after I put synthetic in it and I think it worked something loose and plugged a lifter oil hole. I will never run synthetic again in my old cars!
Thanks again.
Anyone else have any ideas?
Chris
