6000 rpm redline?

i know most tpi cars are limited to 4500 or 5000 rpm redlines....but my dash rpm gauge has the red with black slashes at 5500 and solid red at 6000...whats the deal? as far as i can tell this is how it came from the factory.

What year? I know 85's have a 6000rpm redline tach in them. No point in revving it that high though.

89 GTA 5spd, in 2nd it pulls hard to 4800rpm, but keeps pulling pretty well to at least 6000rpm. Anyone else notice this with 5spd cars? Just wondering when to shift for racing?

My stock '87 L98 runs out of breath about 4700 rpm, and is on it's back by 5000! By the tach it yellowlines at 5000 rpm and redines at 5500.

correct me if I'm wrong (and i probably am) but didn't those tachs only come on the L69 carbed 305? if it's a TPI motor, it might not be original

Nah, I had an 85 TPI TA and so did a friend, and they both redlined at 6000 according to the tach. GM mix+match at its best.

just to let you guys know....most of the factory tachs are WRONG.

go put in a low rev limiter chip in your msd, if so equipped, and go see when your factory tach starts limiting....you will be surprised
