Gas Tank Fitment

I have a new Spectra Premiumn Gas Tank part #GM2721B for my 1985 Iroc-Z Camaro with 305/TPI. Have double checked part # and is correct. Two problems: Filler neck is not angled in correct position and Putting the tank under the car and it does not quite fit right, causing the holding straps to be too far away to start the bolts that hold it in. Has this been a common problem with aftermarket tanks? Do I need to beat and heat it to fit? I looked at another new tank and it is made the same as the one I bought. Simply is not a drop in replacement. Any ideas? Badman

Re: Gas Tank Fitment

thats funny since this is what they say about their tanks.

Why Spectra Premium Fuel Tanks are the only choice:

* Exact fit for easy installation
* Factory leak tested
* Meet or exceeds manufacturer’s specifications
* O.E.M. Approved Ni Terne Steel
* Corrosion Resistant
* Precision Engineering and Tooling
* Manufactured under QS-9000 and ISO 9002 Quality Systems
* 100% Tested

my guess is you dont have the right angle on it maybe, also try to tweak the neck some.

Re: Gas Tank Fitment

You know what they say," Don't believe everything you read." I am going to have to heat the neck and bend it to the correct angle and also found two places on the top of the tank that I "adjusted" with a 4lb. hammer. It is a shame that as many of these cars were made that a manufacturer cannot build a part that fits correctly. I looked at 4 of these tanks at different parts stores and all were made incorrectly! Also talked to a mechanic at a local shop and he just laughed. Said if he got a tank that fit perfectly first time, he would have a heart attack. Badman

yeah i guess I will stay away from that brand, Advance Auto carries only that brand so maybe I will go with a Napa or Autozone

Re: Gas Tank Fitment

Got the tank in. Had to heat and bend filler neck to fit properly. Also had to "massage" top of tank to fit in well. Walbro pump works great and is fairly quiet. Now I can drive my car some.
