What cam to get?

Summit racing has a cam kit for pre87 tpi cars. 204/214 duration@.050lift,.420"/.442" lift. They claim 40 horses w/ superchip installed. Will this be a good cam for my 85tpi Trans am? Or is there a better one? I plan to install the cam and put on some edelbrock headers so I should see a little more than 40 horses. Any other suggestions would help also.

With 4.11 gears you may want to get a cam designed for a higher rpm range. Then you'll have to compensate with the intake, heads, etc.

'88 IROC TPI 355, '69 truck 4-bolt, fully balanced, 9.75:1 compression, fully ported '70 truck heads(for now), Harland Sharp 1.6 Roller Rockers, Comp Cams CS 252AH-12, ported '86 TPI converted to speed density, Crane AFPR, Flowmaster 3in. exhaust, Edelbrock TES headers, all emissions equipment is still intact, plan on burning my own chips, many more mods and parts on the way as time and money permits =(
Best E.T. with TBI 305: 16.11 @ 82mph
Haven't been to track with new motor
If you have any questions on converting from TBI to TPI email me at jdkchevy70@yahoo.com
In memory of Dale Earnhardt, I'll miss cheering for that black #3 on raceday!!!

If I was to use that cam in a 305 TPI car, I would want to use 1.6 roller rockers for sure. That will bring the lift up to .448"/.471" and will help you out more, especilly up high. With that lift, I would strongly recomend that you change out your springs and retainers, and while you are in there, your valve seals too. I know stock springs are supposed to be good up to .500" lift, but while you are swapping a cam, you might as well spend the money to get the entire valvetrain in good shape. You can also have a machine shop or auto parts store clean up your heads and valves for you, I am sure there is a good deal of carbon deposits on them.

The cam kit comes w/lifters,springs,& retainers. If I change the rear gears what should I install?
