Won't start/Hard start, Pinging...

87 IROC TPI on a 90 350HO motor.

Won't start unless initial timing is set above 12 degrees. Then the pinging starts when driving. Whats up?

Have set IAC, TPS, checked for vacume leaks, etc...

Thanks

Dog,

How is the compression? Low compression can cause poor starting and protracted cranking. Advanced timing can offset the problem to some extent, but doesn't really fix it.

This might not help but, i had tune done at local garage. No one knew the harmonic balancer had spun. Timing was set, but marks were off. Replaced the balancer and starting problem was solved.

It has been a while, but last time I checked the compression reading was 210-220 on all 8 cyclinders.

As to the spun harmonic balancer, how can it spin when it is "keyed" in place? And that would only give you a incorrect timing reading. Not hard starting or pinging.

Any thing else to check?

Thanks, BDW
