383 build advice needed
383 build advice needed
Hi all, I don't usually post here, just lurk around and try to research for my project but I am to the point where I need some pointers. I am building a 383 TPI setup. I plan to use ported stock TPI comonents for now but may upgrade to some better runners etc in the future. Definately want to stay with a long tube runner style. I am using a Powerhouse 383 kit with cast crank. My 350 core is a 89 TBI rollercam from a caprice cop car. I am looking to have an engine with strong low and midrange torque with no real reason to top 5500rpm. I am also planning to upgrade to the 0411 OBDII system. This will be running with a manual 4 speed trans. I need some advice on what to do for a roller cam and heads to be compatible with my goals. I have looked at the vortec, powerhouse, patriot, and even summit and jegs heads just not sure what to choose. I would like the heads to come in at or below $1K preferably below. I haven't really put too much thought into using my current heads but I guess that is a possibility too (don't even know what the are currently) I am also lost as to a cam. All the magazine write up I see are for carbed applications but I want one that will be TPI friendly. So please point me in the right direction here.

For a camshaft i would go with a ZZ409. Gives lots of grunt down low. For the heads with a 383 i had edelbrock heads with an intake 2.02 and exhaust 1.6 The intake was to small. I upgraded to dart 200 heads with a 2.05 intake and made a huge difference. Thats what i have and works perfect

I went with the powerhouse 383 stroker kit. Wound up not being able to use the rods cause of clearance issues. Went with eagle h-beam rods which wouldn't work with the pistons, so had to get new pistons. Only thing I used from the kit was the crank and a few gaskets.
If you haven't already purchased the powerhouse kit, might wanna consider the eagle kit.
I went with the Lingenfelter 74211 cam. It's designed especially for TPI.
It works well but the stock heads will need to be modified for the increased lift.
Factory 350 TPI heads aren't bad heads for what you're wanting to do. I had mine modified with 2.02 and 1.6 valves installed, guide plates and springs for $400.

I have a eagle stroker crank internally balance, be sure that your machine shop polishes the thrust bearing area . I wiped out a thrust bearing in a hour because of that. Some cranks are not being polished correctly. Other than that it is a good piece
