TPI High RPM Problem
I have a 1992 TA, and I have a High RPM problem. The car will rev to 4800 RPM, and then it will just stop reving. I understand that TPI engines run out of steam at mid 4000 Rpm, but my friends '86 TPI will rev to at least 5500 RPM. My engine will not even pull to 5000 RPM. The motor is a 1986 Q-jet motor, with the TPI on there. It is like the engine hits a rev limiter.
Thanks Guys

Re: TPI High RPM Problem
Does the throttle cable get stuck?
How far will it rev if you manually open the butterflies from the throttle body itself?

It does open to full throttle, and the engine sounds like it falls on its face, not just like half throttle sound. I sounds and feels like a rev limiter.

Re: TPI High RPM Problem
is the fuel pump good? is your ignition up to date? are the injectors working and ohm out to spec?

Re: TPI High RPM Problem
warm up the car to operating temps... shut it down and then unplug the injector clips and take a ohm meter of somesort and check the resistance between the metal clips on the injector. should read 16+ or so. if they dont then the injectors are bad.
my car was hitting a brick wall sometimes in thirdgear at 4000-4200rpms or so. accelerated fine in other gears till that point and the car just stopped pulling. i had 2 bad injectors.
not sayin that is the problem but it was for me and is worht checking in your case. problem with TPI is its hard to get at those injectors. I love my HSR

Re: TPI High RPM Problem
Remove connector measure resistance acroos injector prongs.
Should be 16 ohms ±1 ohm.
voltage = amps x resistance, rearranged to solve for amps = voltage/resistance
amps = 12 volts/16 ohms
amps = .75 amps x 8 injectors = 6 amps
So if the resistance is low or drops as the injector heats up, say they all drop to 8 ohms each that will increase the amps draw to 12 amps and blow the fuse(s)
Check the injector resistance cold and hot, in your case when it stops revving.
This doesn't verify proper mechanical operation of the injector only that it should work properly.

Re: TPI High RPM Problem
third gen cars are notorious for the tach being wrong. the reistors on the back of the tach will short out and make the tach read wrong, your friends TPI (if its stock) most deffiently doesnt make power over 5k, no matter what.
the tach in my 92 z28 would read 5500rpm at the time it would switch gears, and would feel like it had completely lost power at 5k. well, in all truth when i dynojet'ed the car the tach was off and it was shifting at 5k and the motor died out at 4800ish rpm.
