winter is here its time to mod

hey guys its been a while since i last posted due to a lot of school. anyways i have now put the bird away for winter but its time to make some changes to her. i have been thinking about getting the tpis big mouth manifold w/ large tube runners and possible the 52mm throttle body to compliment the new intake setup. my biggest thing is the heads, i want to do those as well while i have the intake removed any good head recommendations to go with the intake

Re: winter is here its time to mod

Do a quick search and you should be able to find many members running setups similar to what you are describing.

Also, I wouldn't bother upgrading to a 52mm TB with that setup. Take that money and put it toward some headers, a cam, or a free-flowing exhaust. Or all three!

Hope this helps!

Re: winter is here its time to mod

Thx for the reply i actually do have headers and a free flowing dual exhaust setup already that i did this year. just in a debate about which heads, was thinking of the ones from tpis. along with the big mouth and runners. i do want to get a cam but ill do that when i do the block. all said would the new throttle body still be a waste or would it be worth while? i do plan on going 383 in like 2 years.

Re: winter is here its time to mod

I've always read that AFR heads flow the best. You might want to look into them at http://www.airflowresearch.com/. If cost is an issue, you could always go with Vortecs but keep in mind you will have to use a Vortec-style intake such as Edelbrock or Scoggin-Dickey.

If you decide to keep the motor 350, I wouldn't go over 180cc heads. If you are going to definately go 383, then I would go with 200cc heads.

My advice would be to make sure whatever heads you buy have a good set of springs... you never know what cam you might want to run when the time comes

With just big mouth & runners, the stock TB is fine. If you go 383, then I could see the upgrade. Don't get me wrong - going 52mm now shouldn't hurt anything... you just won't see much of a gain for the money spent (thus my 'use your money elsewhere' comment).

Just my 2 cents.

Hope this helps!

Re: winter is here its time to mod

Thx for the reply, ill definitly look into those heads and yea i do definitly plan on going 383 in a few years hopefully 2. so ill prob look into 200cc heads just so i dont have to buy another set when the time comes, will 200cc heads hurt anything until the time 383 comes?

Re: winter is here its time to mod

I don't think the 200cc heads will hurt anything... you might lose a little torque down low. Other than that, there just won't be enough incoming air-flow to take advantage of the bigger volume.

As tenpin suggested, you may want to upgrade the cam since you will have a lot of the engine apart.

BTW tenpin, what wheels are those? They look great!

Re: winter is here its time to mod

absolutely, u just have to be extremely gentle not to nick a journal, and there is a cross support in front of the radiator that is just barely in the way 4 bolt to remove it

Re: winter is here its time to mod

Well, your taking the top half off already. Only thing left is the water pump, harmonic balancer, and the timing chain cover. Then remove the timing chain.
Like I said, your only 30 mins away from doing a cam swap. I did mine while the motor was in my car. I wish i would have had some $$$ for some heads.
But, I'd buy a new timing chain and gear set while your at it. The gasket kit you get will have all your gaskets. So your all set. O dont forget about an adjustable fuel pressure regulator.

I know the factory wheels are offset differently in the back. Are all four of your wheels the same or are there different ones for the back? Thanks!

87_gta, changing the cam isn't that bad... I've changed mine twice with the motor in the car. The only thing you have to watch is the cross support bars that fire350tpi mentioned. If you don't remove them (or at least move them somehow), there won't be enough room to get the cam out. I found that out the hard way
