I had my intake off the other day (the first time since last summer). Anyway, towards the end of the summer I had a new MAF put on it (the other one went dead for some reason). I was looking at it and noticed that it was different than my old one. It has a circuit board looking thing in the middle where the thin wires used to be. It also doesn't have the fins at the bottom. I also noticed that it has a front screen, but there is not one on the back. Has anyone seen this kind of MAF and know exactly the differences between the two (other than the obvious)? Thanks
Matt

Vader,
That is the one that does not use a wire filament, making it a whole lot more reliable? I think you said they run about $250. Next time mine goes, I'm going with one of those. Where do you get them again?

Yes, this is the thick-film sensor MAF. It flows at 700+ SCFM and only cost me $172.80, not $250.00. It's a WElls SU-145, and replaces the Bosch MAF exactly. The same connector, outside dimensions, and signal output rate, but is about 8mm larger on the inside and has a single flat metal matrix in place of the round wire screens used in the Bosch/Delco 14094712 ($454.00 dealer net).

Anyone that sells Wells os Conradreplacement parts should be able to order it for you. If you live in the upper midwest, you can get them at several locations.<font face="Verdana, Arial" size="2">Originally posted by IROCZTWENTYGR8:

If you still have trouble sourcing the part, check the Wells site for authorized distributors in your area:

Vader,
Yes that is exactly what it looks like. So, there is nothing special about it really, other than the fact that it is obviously not going to be as sensitive as the tiny wires on the old one? That I am very happy about. I was just curious cause I had never seen one like that before. I would have thought that with all the people on here talking about MAF's in the past that they would have been brought up a few times. Thanks

IROC, it is better than a stock MAF, and flows more than 700CFM compared to the stocks around 500CFM, so u don't have to, and shouldn't mod it.

Yeah, I wasn't thinking about it really. I mean, the rear screen is not there, and it didn't appear to have any of the obstructions in it like my old one. I figured it must be better some how so I would just leave well enough alone. Thanks for you're help.

You might try a NAPA if those are around your area. I think that is where mine came from since my mechanic gets most of his parts from NAPA. I would call some parts stores and see what they have.

Call Tom Martin at (800) 288-6728 Ext 115 and order it directly from Wells, I think the last time I called they charged $160 plus shipping.

does anyone know if this maf is capable of reading more air flow as well as flowing more
For a source for the Wells/Conrad MAF sensor, check the archives. I'll help you out this time....
https://www.thirdgen.org/messgboard/...ML/002288.html
Incidentally, NO MAF sensor will read more air than the ECM will allow. The stock ECM had a firmware limit of 255grams/second of intake air as a calculation for fuel flow. All flows beyond that at WOT are adjustable by injector size, fuel pressure setting, and PROM modification. There are other means of sensing more intake air in the works, but my initila tsting is underway and I'm encountering some "difficulties" in gettng programming correct. It might be a while. In addition to that, there are actually very few engines that require more air intake thant eh stock system can monitor, and the owners/builders of those engines have other means of fuel delivery available. The TPI system, even in a heavily-modded state, just really isn't best for high RPM flow. It can be made better, but isn't the BEST.

I just saw that exact maf in the junk yard. It was in a v6 bird. I thought it was v6 specific.

Tony,
You didn't, because that exact MAF is on my '86 TA.
Moreover, a V-6 MAF is probably the digital output type as opposed to the analog MAFs on V-8 engines. V-8 MAFs were digital in the early 1985 TPI engines on both 'F' and 'Y' cars, and went to the analog Bosch unit in late 1985. All 1986-1989 V-8s were analog. The MAF disappeared in 1990 with the advent of (or more technically correct, reversal to) the TBI-type speed-density control scheme. The MAF returned out of the necessity for better fuel control in 1993 on the LT1 engines, and has been a part of almost all PFI engines since then, but again in a digital output form.
The Buick V-6 engines using a MAF sensor remained digital during that entire period, as did many of the Chevrolet MPFI engines.
In other words, No, you didn't.
