ZZ3 cam in a 350

In my search for a cam, I am thinking about the zz3 cam. Does anyone here run it and how do you like it? What setup do you have? I will be running a 350 with ported plenum, Accel base a few other minor goodies with 3.42's and a 5-spd. Do yo think it wil be OK, or should I go with something else for a daily driver with 300hp. At least that is the goal

Yep, I used it in my previous engine, its a great cam. But if you are using the stock heads, you'll need new valve springs to handle the lift.

I am using alum heads and I can get the springs. What kind of power did it make, how did it feel, and did it pass emmissions(sp)? I autoX this thing, so i would like good response.

It made 280 HP and 380 TQ to the wheels with a ported stock TPI intake, L98 aluminum heads, SLP 1 5/8" headers. I dont know if it passed smog, I pulled it out when I over revved it at the track and put in a stock engine to smog with. But it should have passed smog easily.

Jeremy,
I'm running the ZZ3 cam and like it a lot. I have not dynoed the car so don't have any numbers for you put it is much faster than the stock setup. I passed California smog with no problems, although I understand Los Angeles has a different test than I have here in Central Calif., but I believe it would pass that test as well.
As Kevin said you will need different valve springs to handle the increased valve lift. I used the GM springs that come with the LT4 Hot Cam kit. These springs are larger diameter than the stock springs and required machine work. Good luck!

You definatly need machine work for bigger springs and cut the valve guide down.

Thanks Pete. The springs I have will handle 510 lift, which is what the zz3 cam has, I might try these until something goes wrong. I really don't plan on pushing the motor real hard.

Jeremy-
I've talked to Kevin alot about this too. I bought a ZZ4 cam I bleieve (same or different) and am bulding an L98 with ported plenum, ported iron L98 heads, gasket matched everything, Edelbrock TES headers, 3" exhaust, holley AFPR, holley/walbro 255lph pump, coil, wires, K&N, flows, 6-spd, and 4.10's. I'm hoping for a low 13 with good traction. Its all in the works right now. I already have the motor, cam, headers, pump, etc, but I need to re-ring the motor and turn down the crank. I'm also trying to find the correct springs so I don't need machine work. Which should I run? Anyone? I'm also contemplatin some 1:6I and 1:52E roller rockers. Anyone have any thoughts? Thanks, and good luck!

K-Motion I think 750's from jegs. They are stock diameter, made of H-11 tool steel wire and I have 20,000 miles on mine with a zz cam.

they are around $125.

I am also considering 1.6/1.52 but I haven't done enough reading on it. any responses on this would be nice. 91GTA, we have Very similar motors, keep in touch on the progress.

As far as valve springs go, www.fastvalves.com sells stock diameter springs that will go to .600 lift. I have a set, not installed yet. You have to watch the installed height. I need longer valves, offset keepers, shims, and custom pushrods. It does get expensive.

Thats cool! They do sound little similar. I hope mine just gets done this summer. I may scratch the roller rocker idea for costs right now, but still need the RIGHT valve springs. Give me a holler at: heizemen80@hotmail.com

*Hope to hear from you soon! Later
