Rev Limiter?

I have a problem with my 92 TPI. At 4800 RPM, it hits a brick wall, not just running out of power, but almost like a revlimiter. I will never go past that, and I would like to. It has a different distrubiter, new MSD Coil, new plugs, new wires, new ignition module, and cap rotor assembly. I don't know why it does this, but it almost seems like a revlimiter. Thanks for any and all help.

Re: Rev Limiter?

Factory TPI runs out of power around 4500-4800 RPM's... there just isn't enough volume to flow more air in the runners.

If I remember right, the MSD boxes should have some Rev Limiter settings on the side of it. Check those and see what they are set at.

Re: Rev Limiter?

I don't have a MSD box, just coil. And I know that TPI runs out of breath, at high RPMs, but I have no topend because of it. A friend of mine can pull his TPI all the way to 6500 RPM. I also want to port to get some more RPM power, but this is still stopping me.

Thanks

Re: Rev Limiter?

Does it do it at idle too, or just when you're driving? Sounds like you have a clogged cat or some other restriction in the exhaust, or even in the air filter.

The engine should still physically rev up to 6000+ rpms, but it wont make any more power above 4500+. The stock rev limiter in the chip is set to 10,000 rpms.

Re: Rev Limiter?

It is fine all the way up to there. It has a gutted cat and K&N filter. It may not have the stock chip, so I may check that. What is the best way to get the chip out?, and can I go to the junk yard and grab another one?

Re: Rev Limiter?

Only if the chip you grab is the same 4 letter code as what you have.

To get at the computer you need a 7mm socket. Remove the dash panel on the passenger side, and then the bracket holding the computer, and drop them both down. The cover on the computer uses 1/4" screws.

Re: Rev Limiter?

I would verify the rpm gauge to what the computer reads rpm wise.
sounds like fuel related, my guess would be fuel pump running out of steam, or maybe weak injectors.

my car used to kinda pause in that same rpm area and then kinda go alittle bit more rpm wise.

some said it was also around where the torque converter locks up WOT, but u have a manual.

it still should physically run up up near 6k or so but I wouldnt turn it further. like said peak power and tq are 5k and below.

what timing do you have it set to? should be around 6 base with the EST wire disconnected.

Re: Rev Limiter?

Timing is at 6 base. It has a Walbro 255LPH fuel pump. I will try changing the fuel filter, and let you know what happens.

Re: Rev Limiter?

I had the same problem, then I installed a msd distributor and it solved the problem. I believe it was the ignition module

Re: Rev Limiter?

I see you changed your rear end. Did you match your speedo gear to the axle ratio? If not, you are reaching the top mph governor.

Re: Rev Limiter?

This happens in every gear. I have yet to put on the fuel filter because of the weather. I will do it soon, and let you know.

Re: Rev Limiter?

my car did that too at similar rpm. turns out i had bad injectors.

you still have stock injectors? i'd suggest testing them with an ohm meter to see if they are within spec.

else try ignition module

Re: Rev Limiter?

I already tested the injectors, they are good.
The ignition module is brand new.

Re: Rev Limiter?

The ignition may be faulty. Unfortunatley it is very hard to tell.
