TPI Question( Help ASAP!)

Ok I am in the middle of putting aftermarket valve covers on my '91 Z w/ a 350 TPI engine.
I need to know what the H-E-Double hockeysticks is the hose that runs from the top left throttle body to the the valve cover? Can this be discarded and blocked off? Any help would be much appreciated.

Its the breather for the valve cover. You can block the hole on the TB and put in an aftermarket breather, but I would stick with the hose from the cover to the TB. Its to let pressure out of the engine I beleive.

That is part of your PCV system with out it your PCV will not function properly and you may have some odd things happening with your engines running condition.

Just check the Haynes manual for a complete list of symptoms from a non-working PCV.

The PCV is in the drivers side cover and goes into a port between the runners into the manifold not the TB

The PCV valve is on the driver's side, you are correct. But the breather is part of the PCV system, so so was he.

You wouldn't happen to have any relatives that run over at EAMS would you? Seems like I remember a Jeff Culpepper or something.

I am not related to Jeff Culpepper, but I know who you are talking about. Know several of the guys that race over there. I go over to the Phenix City Drag Strip pretty often also. You might see me over there or at EAMS.

And thans for the help. I figured that it had something to do with the circulation of the PCV system.

I am here to tell all of you that running an open element breather on the passenger side rocker cover and blocking off the port on the TB, works just fine and:
a) does not mess with the PCV system
b) does not affect the idle and
c) does not affect any of the computers inputs from the engine - even if it is a MAF system.

As long as the port is blocked off on the TB, it will not trigger ANY DTC's (if the car has a MAF system and if the port on the TB is open the engine will get some air 'leaking' into the intake stream behind the MAF that will not be properly metered by the MAF sensor which is a no-no). The PCV valve and hose on the driver side, is ported to the intake BEHIND the throttle plates and therefore is not affected by any change in the breather system that is BEFORE the throttle plates. The PCV valve on the driver side rocker cover IS supplied with vacuum and therefore IS factored into the idle tables in the EPROM. If it is replaced with a breather or plug and the port on the intake blocked off, a DTC will likely be set and it will idle erratically at the very least. I have never attempted to do this since I know that the engine does in fact need this particular component (in stock trim). The engine does not, however, NEED the breather system on the passenger rocker cover. The breather system on the passenger side rocker cover is ported through the TB, in front of the throttle plates (ie. no vacuum is supplied to it) and therefore will not affect the engine negatively if it is unused. I know this all to be true because I have done this with both of the TPI cars I have owned (both MAF) and on other cars that my friends' have owned and never had a DTC or any other problem with the engine.

However, if your engine has a lot of miles on it, it may have excessive blow-by and expell so much oil out of the open element breather that it gets on your rocker cover and other componants near by. If that is the case I would keep the breather hooked up to the TB as it keeps the engine bay cleaner.

Now that that is cleared up...... lol....
