GTA Intake Manifold Woes

Ok, I need to buy a new intake manifold (lower section) and I found someone selling one off of a 85/ or an 86 IROC (he's not sure which year it specifically is of the two..) is it the same manifold that is on my 87 GTA ? just wondering if it will work....also, does anyone know where I can find a new manifold for fairly cheap, be it aftermarket or OE. the junkyards have let me down so far. thanks

I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but I think it was the '88 and up manifolds that had different mounting angles for the center 4 bolts that attach to the heads. So an '85 or '86 should work.
Then there's the issue of the "9th" injector. I have an '89 so I don't need to deal with it, but I don't know what year they stopped using it.

'87 was the first year for the new intake bolt pattern. You can get a drill and make an earlier intake work, but it ain't pretty.

Panthro is right about the 9th injector, you may have to block it off if you find a later model OE intake and you will have to block it w/ an aftermarket intake.

No, the 85-86 manifold is different than your 87. You need one from an 87-92 TPI car. Or a better solution, but more expensive, is an aftermarket intake manifold from Edelbrock, TPIS, or Accel.

Ben I just swapped out my 88 GTA’s stock base intake manifold last weekend. If you want maybe you and I can make a deal for it. The only thing is I live in Hawaii so shipping may be a little expensive. Send me an email if you are interested.

You might have to have a special chip burned if you eliminate the 9th injector. I unplugged mine to see what it would do, and it WOULD NOT START. I THIINK, 87 & 88 are the same intake since they both used the same heads from 87-92 on 305s, and I Think the 89 was the first year to eliminate the cold start injector.
I happen to have an extra 89 TPI intake.

About those aftermarket manifolds.. anyone have any links to their info/pn/prices? I have some extra cash from graduation, and am maybe in the market from one since it has to be replaced anyways.... and, no, I can't afford a mini/super/tunnel ram setup; didn't get THAT much $$ from grad. thanks

Ok, did a little hunting around on the web.. anyone have the CFM comparison of a ported stock manifold vs. the Superram High flow manifold.. just wondering if the 380 bucks it costs is worth it... (puts a pretty large dent in the blower fund)
thx
