New to TPI with stalling car...please help
Hey guys,
New to the TPI world here, just bought an '87 Trans Am with 305TPI (5 speed) to replace my wrecked '84 Camaro. Anyways, I've got a problem. My car doesn't seem to find a consistant idle speed. Don't get me wrong, it idles smooth, but sometimes high and sometimes so low that it stalls. Seems to be more of a problem when the engine is hot than when it is cold. I read the IAC and TPS adjustments on the tech articles page and tried to do both adjustments. TPS seemed to work out good (old reading was way low, and the hightest reading I could get at idle was .53V), but IAC didn't seem to do too well. Now I've got the car idling at over 1000rpm, and have stalling problems if I drop it lower. Should I try removing the IAC and cleaning or replacing it. Doesn't look like an easy job since I can't figure out how to get a tool on it to unscrew it. Do they go bad often? Who knows, maybe I'm pursuing the whole wrong thing here. I'm open to any suggestions. Oh yeah, fuel filter gets replaced tomorrow. The TPS adjustment seemed to make the car drive better/stronger, but that could just be wishful thinking. I hate the stalling problem though. Oh yeah, one last thing. Seems to do better idling when I let off the gas slowly, rather than suddenly taking my foot off. That's when it dies most of the time (sudden rpm drop to idle). Hope you TPI guys can help me out.
Later,
MikeS

One more thing I found....
When I turn the A/C on, the car doesn't bump up the idle speed to compensate for the load. Instead, it just drops by one or two hundred rpm.

Checked for codes the other day. There were none there til I started messing with things. Is it normal to have trouble getting the car to idle when you do the minimum air setting? I couldn't really get it down to 450rpms like the articles say. 550 or 600 was the lowest reliable idle speed that I could make it run at (with IAC disconnected).
