whats the difference between a world class t-5 and a regular one???
ok - I always here about these and i'm not sure what the differences were - I'm hoping the world class one can handle much more torque - also I've read people say they got a world class one from 90-92 cars - since I have a 91 I'm hoping I have one and it has a higher torque rating so when I do my cam swap I don't have to worry as much about it blowing up...

I don't know the exact differences between the world class and the standard T-5, but the World Class is much stronger, especially in the input shaft bearing area. The regular T-5 was rated to handle about 285 lb-ft of torque, while the WC could handle around 335. The WC T-5 came in all F-bodies from 87' and later, so yes, you do have one. I've heard of them holding up behind ZZ4's if you are responsible with it. (no power shifts, 5000 RPM clutch drops, etc.)

The WCT5 came in 88 and later f-bodies. Your 91 car should have one, unless it was replaced by a previous owner.

I've heard that it was both 88' and 87'. I only arque that the 87's were because the the 5-speed was availible with the 305TPI which produced more than the 275 lb-ft torque rating of the old T-5's.

The T-5 in my 91 GTA is holding up fine. I have the ZZ4 355hp 405lbs tq. eng. It surprised me at how well it did hold up, unlike my tires....

Tapered roller bearings, needle bearings under the gears, o-ringed front countershaft race, organic lined synchros. I think that about covers it. The WC tranny is rated at 300 ft/lbs, but thats based on a normal idiot 100K mile test cycle, not someone who knows how to drive and doesnt abuse it. Ive seen them last just fine, what really gets them is torque spikes, they dont take all that well to that.
The WC T-5 was first officially offered in thirdgens in 1988. If GM ran out of non-WC trannys in 87 and started substituting the WC trans rather than having leftover non-WC trannys, well then they did, but the official date was 88.

ok - awesome - I was starting to get a little worried about my tranny since I've seen posts saying t-5s can only handel 285-300 ft lbs... my car will have somehwere about 330-340 so that makes me feel a lot better especially hearing it might even be able to handel a zz4

Hey kane,
What do you have done to your car to have 330-340lb. tq.? I have a LB9 also. I am swapping in a carb'd 350 until I can get the 305 and T-5 built.

My car ran a 12.44 at 114.63 and a few very similar passes like that. That calculates to 433 hp assuming 3650 lbs total weight. That then equates to a peak torque of at least 412 ft lbs since I didn't shift over 5000 rpm. Those trannys must have huge factors of safety.
