My 350 TPI has a problem with idling. When its in drive, the car bounces from 750-500rpm, and seems like its going to stall out. When my friend adjusted the timing a bit on the distributor, it idled perfectly, but accelerated slower than my mom's SHADOW. When he put it back to the bad idle, it regained all its power.
Do I have a vaccuum leak? Or is there some other way to set the idle?
I'm not exactly sure of all the modifications that have been done to the engine, since its not stock. The guys at firestone weren't going to touch it until they knew what's been done to it. I could find out all the mods, but its going to take some time to track the kid down.
Any help is appreciated.

did you disconnect the EST bypass wire? its the brown wire with a black stripe running up near the firewall on the passenger side. its got a big black connector on it. you need to disconnect that wire then set the timing.

How simple is it to set the idle? I've only done minor engine stuff (water pumps, radiators), and don't wanna mess anything up. Do I need any special tools to do it?

Sorry, I'm still kinda learning about this stuff.
