Code 42 EST problem...again :(

I took out my ignition module and found some corrosion on the leads that go to the pickup coil and also found it to have very little dilectric grease. So I cleaned the contacts with a file and re greased the mod and put it all back together.

Now I only get code 42 when the A/C is on and blowing cold.

I got the car hot the other day (bad fan relay) and didn't have any problem with codes at all, so its not temp related.

It runs fine even when it triggers the SES light, and never stutters or anything at any time.

I am thinking the pickup in the distributor is maybe cracked???

Input appreciated.

my brothers 88 tpi corvette is throwing a code 42 right now. we have changed the ignition module 3 times, cleaned all connections, and looked all over for a problem but we have yet to figure any thing out. his runs like chit though when the SES light is on, even dieing the first couple of times you start it. after you drive it for a while, kill it, then restart it, it runs normal with no light and without hesitating. the only other thing i can think of is the ecm, but i cant figure out why it would get better after you drove it a while if it was the ecm.

After getting some advice from friedns I have come to the conclusion that the magnetic pickup in the distributor may have a crack in it.

It figures....I guess I'll be taking the dist. out this weekend. ]

I have an electrical diagnosis manual and a service manual and a Haynes manual from my 88 Vette that I am looking to sell. I also have a K&N filter....

Let me know if he may be interested in this stuff.

Thanks.

This may be stupid but have you gone over all the wiring. I had this same problem and it ended up I had a bad connection at the distributor plug (white wire). Good luck.

sounds like you have the same problem as me, get a timing light and when the ses light is on check the timing without disconnecting the est bypass, if it is at base timing with the est bypass connected then for some reason the timing is not being advanced by the computer, unfortunately i haven't found the cause

problem is solved. we took the ecm out of my tpi iroc and threw it in his tpi vette with his eeprom and it ran perfect. we took the bad ecm and put it in my car, threw the code 42 and ran like ****. im 100% sure that my car doesnt have any EST problems. the computer was the blame the whole time. it did start out as an every now and then occurance, but it got to where it would throw the code every time you started it.

Thanks for the input. I am glad you got the Vette fixed!

Anyways....time to try changing out the ECM. I think my probelm started when I switched PROMs. I may have cracked the board or something.

Well....I can get a ECM for about $50 so I will try it next.

Thanks again.

Mike

I know people high up.

Sorry, just my connection. I tried hooking people up before and it backfired, so I won't be doing that anymore. Sorry
