is there a rev limiter

ok so i have a 305 TPI motor. now i asked someone on here if there was a rev limiter on the motor and he said that the limiter is set at 10000. now first off my tach doesnt even go that high. and second off when i do a burnout by powerbreaking my rpm's will get to around 6k and then drop to around 3 or 4 grand the it will go back up then back down and it repeats this till i let go off the gas and stop burning the rubber. so is this a rev limiter or is there such a major loss of power that it does that. i have read that at higher rpm's the 305 TPI starves for air. but i dont know if this is what i am experiancing or not.

Re: is there a rev limiter

Do you have an automatic transmission?

There's no rev limiter on a TPI car from the factory.

Re: is there a rev limiter

There is a rev limiter in tpi chips but its set to 10,000 rpms at the factory. Its possible that someone activated the rev limiter if you have an aftermarket chip. Check your prom chip for a silver sticker with a four letter code stamped on it by looking in one of the two holes in the blue plastic cover.. If you see a smiley face or no sticker at all its probably aftermarket.

Re: is there a rev limiter

more than likely since its an automatic transmission it is shifting gears, thats why you feel the drop. if you are daring and dont care if you motor blows up, put it in first and see what happens

Re: is there a rev limiter

Even if you manually select 1st gear on the 700r4 it will still shift to seconds around 5500 RPM's. Your engine will never touch the factory rev limiter if it is set at 10K. you'll float the valves long before that.

Re: is there a rev limiter

If he does have an aftermarket chip, it takes two seconds to reprogram the rev limiter to kick in at whatever rpm you want it to, if you have the hardware to reprogram your chip that is. It shuts off the injectors at the preprogrammed rpm.

Re: is there a rev limiter

Ive brought mine into 7k territory in first and it did not shift. I had to let off the throttle because I also thought there would be a rev limiter. I guess you have to find a aftermarket rev limiter.
