Cold start idle problems

Hey everyone.

Well, when i start my car, it always dies unless i give it gas, to raise the idle to 1,200+. Sometimes my ECU throws me a code, sometimes it doesn't. I replaced my ECU last night, with the GM replacement, but the problem still persists.

Once the car warms up, it idles fine. I had the o2 sensor replaced not too long ago. (like a month).

Also, my fan is wired to always be on when the ignition is in the "On" position. I was wondering if this had something to do with it. When the car tries to idle, (it can sometimes) it bumps up and down, barely running, I notice the voltage gauge reads around 9-/+ volts. Once the car has warmed up, it reads at a bit over 14 volts.

I have been wondering if this is a problem due to the fact that the fan is wired to always be on, throwing off the ECU, because the ECU doesn't think the fan is on, and doesn't compensate and increase the voltage because of it. I wonder this because of the voltage drop, and how it hits 14 volts once my engine warms up.

I haven't picked up a fuel pressure gauge yet, to test the fuel pressure. When i took my car to be tested for emissions, the guy commented on how i was running a 16.2:1 lean mixture, and he commented on how lean that was. He did let my car idle for a while first though, im not sure if it got up to operating temperature or not.

I have checked the wiring for the fan, and it is so screwed up, i would just rather but a 300 buck wire harness for my car, then pay whatever it costs to have a professional install it. It's very screwed up. I think the fuel pump is screwy too, because when i disconnected the fuel pump relay, the car still started!

I have already paid a shop tons of money to wire my fan back, and all they did was replace the coolent temperature sensor, and wire the fan to always be on. They then didn't mention that they didn't fix it. §hitheads.

heh, speaking of §hitheads, gotta love the morons who owned our camaros before us!

Thanks for any input. I am going to try jumping up my idle tonight, to see if that will at least give me better cold-driveabilty.

I think you should adjust your IAC (idle air control) then your tps (Throttle position sensor). This is the correct way to set up your Idle. If you need help with this, ask.
p.s. what was the code?

I would check that IAC also. Tried cleaning mine, however it was shot to begin with. Bought a Borg Warner ar Pep Boys today for 38.00. Took care of 90% of my idle problems and slight hesitation while crusing on the highway. Just have to get the curb idle set now. Make sure you clean the IAC passages and throttle during th process. Easy gig.

Been through this, My car would start go up to 1500 RPM, then die, every time I would start the car it would run a little longer, a little longer, then it would bobble all over the place but would stay running. I changed the TEMP SENSOR on the front of the intake all is well.

Check those things that the previous posts suggested too.

Just an FYI, I would check the temp sensor with an ohm meter, & everything would check out. Nothgin seemed wron with it. I even checked the reading back at the ECM connection & it checked out. When I pulled the sensor I broke the plastic piece, so I said, that makes my decision really easy. & it fixed everything.

What was happening to MY car was the ECM thought the temp was 255°F & it turned on the fan. The fan will come on when the ecm thinks your running hot. Thats actually what cued me was when I started the engine the fans would come on.
