w00t!! First 1/4 mile

I just thought i'd use my favorite board (tpi) to share that i ran my first quarter mile at a strip tonight. Got a total of 3 runs best being 15.079@92.40 with a .882 reaction time (pretty bad) and i KNOW the car has alot more to give, i feel i could squeeze a 14.5 or maybe even less when i get comfortable.....
What i dont understand is i could NOT hook up.. I mean well after leaving the line i was still spinning..

So anywho, the question part about this is WHATS NEXT. After SD and headers what do i do with my tpi to get me to the 13s

(also how do i get my car into over drive when i have the pedal pinned? i need another gear desperatly)

oh yea...slicks baby, slicks...I can't hook up at all either, and if I had the $$ I'd get slicks...(but I rather spend the $$ on slicks for the 69...hehe)...if you car can't hook, then it's wasting hp...I could only hook once, when they had the pro-stock running, and I pulled a 2.0 60' on radials...every other times, it's like 2.2 to 2.4...
also, gears, no more than 3.42, I recommend 3.23's...trus me on this, I have experimented, and 3.23's really works out well...and I still go sideways with part throtle .....

See the topic in the theoretical and street racing forum.

you don't need another gear(shifting into o/d @the end of the run will cost you big time.all you need to do is get that engine to pull a little higher in the rpm band (runners baseplate plenum etc.)that will give you the 500 extra rpm's between gears or you could go with taller overall tire height which effectivly reduces your gear ratio instead of 16/50/245's go with 16/60or65/245 it will raise the overall tire height for you

Yea im changing tire size anyways, so I think i'll run 60's.

But remember im running 3.73's and a 107k mile engine, revving high doesn't work to well

To get your car to hook you need to change the pinion angle and the instant center. Using Spohn LCA relocation brackets will help move the instant center back better loading the tires. The stock pinion angle is an incredibly bad 1/2 degree negative. You want 2 to 4 degrees of negative pinion angle to get the tires planted (adjustable torque arm) You also need to maintain that pinion angle and not allow the rear to rotate to ruin your pinion angle, this means good LCA's with Poly bushings and a poly torque arm bushing. Last but not least you need weight transfer. Disconnect the front sway bar is the only easy way to help that.

I'm not one to speak of the 3.73's but when the time comes and the gears "break"(when i have a better tranny that allows for the rear end to break), i'm definatly going to 3.23/3.27's.
And as far as the daily driver goes. I hear you on that one. I'm out of first gear in the first 80feet usually, if that. I can't even imagine running 3.73's without something that lets you go to 6k rpms easily..I shift at 6k because the shortblock is running at best 120psi for compression.. go figure...

Car: 87 Monte Carlo SS
Engine: 89 IROC 350 TPI
Transmission: 700R4 rebuilt w/TCI kit
Axle/Gears: 9" from 57 ranchero unsure gears.
the 3.73's are killing you, I had the same in my monte and every time I punched it, there went the tires. I broke those stuck with 2.73s and I cant break, but they are too high to get a good launch but are great with the overdrive on the highway, 100 mph at about 2800 (dont shoot me on that trying to remember for sure, but I think its close). Im looking for 3.42 for good take offs.

'87 Monte Carlo SS,with '89 IROC 350,700 trans, blew up 3.73 posi stuck with crappy 2.73's neeed gears! hooker headers, flowmaster 2 1/2" exhaust true dualls, recently installed a set of alum vette heads 58cc, new cam for a paxton, recently installed paxton, OMG need a posi bad. So if anyone knows where a buick GN 8.5" rear is let me know.

3:73 are tough on a TPI motor, even with simese runners ans ported intake and plenum,im going through at over 5000.Ran my best MPH when i accidenly bumped it into 4th
LOL,gained about 1.5 MPH by that.Gonna try some taller tires first, see how they do.
