is the MAT even needed on a MAF car?

i've read from the prom experts that the mat does nothing with the fuel curve on maf cars. so what exactly does it do? is it even needed or can it be unplugged and blocked up per se?

My understanding that the MAT sensor is solely for the EGR function, but I do think it's critical for that operation.

Mike is correct, our MAF cars don't rely on the MAT sensor like the SD vehicles do. The main function of it is for the egr. But i believe if it's unplugged it'll set a SES light. Might wish to check the PROM board for more answers.

Could get away with putting a resistor in there for like... say 75 degrees. I'm not sure of the value, but it's in the chilton book.

Makes ya wonder why people bother relocating the MAT, if it only affects the EGR..

As long as the MAT gives a reading above 5*C, the EGR will function. Any resistor with a value of 4,700 ohms or less will ensure the EGR is functioning properly on a MAF car.

But, this should not be done on an SD car as the MAT does control the fuel mixture on SD cars.

the plastic connector on mine was damaged and it is rouned off in the plenum, so i had no choice but to relocate mine. only thing it did was keep the SES light off. i drove around without the sensor for about 2 months and finally got tired of the SES light so i bought the sensor and replaced it. no difference at all.
