Weird Idle issue, need help

Well, my corvette had its first problem today. I turned the car off then about 5 minutes later went to crank it, couldn't get it to start. If I gave it the gas though, it would start, but as soon as i let off it died. Then I tried feathering the gas and had it running for a good 5 minutes at about 1100 rpm, then as soon as I let off, died. Eased it to a shop, and he said what i thought: Idle air control valve. So I leave it there, come back about 2 hours later, and it cranks right up, he didn't do anything to it either!

A sticking plunger in the IAC? If so, how often does this usually occur? Should I get a new IAC?

Any help would be great!

Check the IAC and as well, check your fuel pump. I had an issue where the engine would start, if I held the gas until it warmed up it would idle but rough. Eventually, it would have intermittent starting problems. Changed everything and only the fuel pump fixed it.

Re: Weird Idle issue, need help

The weather was perfect, and it had started only 10 minutes prior, and then again 2 hours later, haven't had the problem since, been 2 days now. Car has a brand new fuel pump, so that can't be the problem, at least I hope so. I'll just get the IAC cleaned along with fixing this nasty oil leak I have right now this weekend.

On the oil leak: It is dripping on to the driver side header, long tubes, and burning off. From what I can see, the area just above the oil filter is where its coming from. Is there an adapter that goes between the block and filter? or could it just be the filter itself?

Yeah and just above the oil filter you should have an oil pressure switch . The best way to operate sould be an engine wash to be sure of the oil leak location . As for the starting//Idle issue I think cleaning the IAC should be the first thing to do to prevent anything like yesterday . But just to be sure , Is there any SES light on intermitently ? It could also sounds like an EGR sometimes stuck open ...

Re: Weird Idle issue, need help

Alright, took the car to the mechanic, he was really impressed with the engine for starters. He said both valve covers are leakin a little and that won't be bad at all, and the IAC needs cleaned, he said to just unscrew it and spray some carb cleaner then some lube in it. The check engine light only comes on when it wont idle while its dying, when running, no light, but if it dies the light comes on.

How do I check for codes on these cars? Is it like my Trans am where you use the paper clip?

Oh, and no egr, its minirammed.

Re: Weird Idle issue, need help

You should have a diagnostic connector under the driver's side dash . Just jump the two pins at the right top . Then the SES should flash 1 time then two time faster (3 times) . It indicates a code 12 , indicating that the autodiagnostic system is functionning properly . The other codes are your present trouble codes on the car ...
