BASE AND RUNNERS

OK one more time time, I am looking at getting a new base and runners. What's the best--TPIS, ACCEL AS&M etc. Which one? I would really like to change cam and heads but won't happen for about 2 years. What should I get?

Hey Mkos where is Independence Ohio? I am in Ontario but only about 1 hour from Toledo. Just curious. I'd like to know what you think of the new intake when you get it running.

I agree with Mkos. Accel runners are also pretty good, but they're cast.

The BEST?

TPIS Big Mouth Base and AS&M Large Tube Runners. That is the BEST combo.

If you want to save money then buy the Edelbrock base and port match it yourself. Then and only then will it be equivalent to a TPIS base.

Don't get any runners except for the AS&M runners. They flow the best.

Should I be able to knock off a couple of tenths in the 1/4 with just changing the base and runners. Besides the mods below I have also ported the plenum. I want to run solidly in the 13's all the time but don't have $$$ right now for complete rebuild.

Bob,
it seems to me that ever since you started modding your car since the 13.88 1/4 mile it has gone slower.. you obviously had a perfect setup. everything was working perfectly with everything else.. i would just leave the car alone, it looks like that you are throwing things our of balance and therefore going slower.
JUST MY OPINION.

I have the Edelbrock HI-Flo base and love it. I am also using SLP runners that I will be modifying over the next few weeks to add additional air flow. I had no problems installing the base and it seems to work very well.

You don't think that increasing airflow would help??? Isn't that the whole idea of making more HP? More air + more fuel = more HP!!
I'm sure it probably needs new plugs and wires which may account for it losing a few ponies.
I would think that a new intake should help!

What's the difference between TPIS and AS&M runners? Which is better if any? Just wondering!

Same TPIS buys them from AS&M and jacks up the price.

The question was I was searching for is do the Edelbrock base and the SLP runners work together. I guess you've already answered that question. How much gain did you find from porting the runners?

If fast89 doesn't get around to reading this do any of you other 3rd gens have any idea how well this combination works?

I have considerable other internal modifications and I sure don't want to start it up with the stock TPI on it. I have until the middle of this week to make up my mind.

Thanks in advance!

I'm just finishing the installation of the AS&M runners and TPIS base. From what I have heard this is the best combo out of the box, but people have had better results porting the hell out of the SLP runners and running them. I just didn't want to spend the time grinding away on a set of runners (and possibly destroying them)

Make sure you get the semi siameesed (sp?) runners they are a little more but well worth it. You have to get them from AZS&M I don't think TPIS carries those, just the LTR.
