Alternator Question
I recently picked my car up from the shop after getting a new flexplate and starter put on. Before i took it there car was running just fine, now my volt guage doesnt show that my battery is charging above 8 volts. I took my Iroc up to the local auto parts store to get my alternator and battery checked and they said that my battery was fully charged and that my alternator was charging at 32 amps. When I hit the gas the meter goes way down to the orange. I tighted my alternator belt and checked all my grounds, WHAT could possibly be the problem? I went ahead and ordered another alternator because I have a warranty on it but check this out: this is the second alternator
(the ordered one will be the 3rd) that I have gotten from oriely's. The first locked up on me now I fear this one is failing me too! Is it normal for the volt meter to not show the regular 13-14 volts charge as normal or what? Could it just be that the internal regulator is sensing that the battery doesnt need that much charge and or what?
Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks Guyz

Re: Alternator Question
Find a hand held voltmeter, check right at the alt to gnd. Should be 13-14 volts. Then check across the battery terminals. these two checks should be very close to the same.
Seem to remember the battery to alt connection on GM's passes by the starter Battery connection.
Hope this helps.

Re: Alternator Question
Maybe the wire that goes to the guage was broken, not replaced right, damaged, or something, when the flex plate and starter was changed.
Did it work okay before?

Re: Alternator Question
You have two rules of repair to pick from.
1 That something changed in the Voltage gauge circuit, while the Flex plate and starter were being replaced.
(Tell the repair shop, you broke it. you fix it. you pay).
Or
2 That the Voltage Guage circuit just happened to change (died of old age maybe), during the exact same time as the repair work was being done.
(Tell any repair shop, this old car as an other problem and can you fix this one too for me, it broke. you fix it. I pay for it).
Get a hand held volt meter or scanner. Check voltage at the ALDL connector use the fuel pump voltage pin. Observe the readings when "hitting the gas" they should be the same as the dash voltage guage.
