89 or 87 tpi manafold?
ok here is the deal, im putting my engine back together.... the engine is almost together... the intake manafold up has yett to go on.... the engine is a 350, came from an 89 iroc, automatic, TPI. the stock engine was a 87 305 iroc, manual, TPI. as many people know, the 87 had a cold start injector, wheile the 89 didnt. since i still have all the parts from the 89 setup, what would be better to do? for the past year, ive had the 87 manafold on, seems only the 87 chip will work, but both computers work good. im still running the t-5 manual, with no problems so far. i tried the 89 chip in the 87 computer, and the car would just turn over, it wouldnt start. currently the 89 computer is in with the 305 chip... and i havnt really noticed a difference.
im just curious if i tried the different setup, if i would notice any difference, either in fuel economy, or power.
im running the injectors from the 350 with the 305 setup right now. and im using the original 305 cold start injector.
also, the FPR, is it the same for the 305 and 350?

The probable cause of the car not starting with the 89 chip is because 89 used VATS.
The fpr is the same for 305 and 350.
I would get a chip from 88 for a 350. The 305 chip isn't 'optimized' for the motor.

It has to be a manual and a 350.
Ooops caught myself, there arn't 350 manuals. Ummm I guess a 305 chip with raised fp will have to get you by until you can get a chip made for your car. Sorry, my mind slipped again.

how much is a performance chip from an aftermarket company that you would sugest for my setup, or can you point me in a good direction for someone who does this for hobby that would do it? im not loking to get big perf boosts from a turbo chip, i just want my baby to run right.

I heard they work pretty good, but honestly I don't use them. TPIS is another source which is $$$$ Something like $570 for a custom. You might wan't to venture into the realm of making your own chip, that way you'll learn something and eventually make a near perfect chip for your car. I'd like to get into it and give it a shot.... All the equip is about the same price and you could make as many chips as you want...

true.... i like learning new stuff about my car.... as long as i dont have to "re-learn" it (fixing the same damn thing again, and again, and again).
plus, it sounds like the equipment to do my own chips is cheaper than buying it(from what you tell me that custom chip costs)
thanx

Go to the prom board and read Traxions article. It's way cheaper than a custom prom and very easy to do. Are you using the 305 injectors? If so there should'nt really be any changes to be made. The MAF system that you have can't disercn a 305 from a 350 and it should run pretty well. Youre best bet would be to intall 22lb/hour injectors, buy the prom burning stuff, and download the arap bin from www.diy-efi.org and then all you have to do is change it to a manual bin by changing one flag.
This may sound a little complicated but its real easy. Read the article, and do a search on ARAP on the prom board.
Good Luck
