Engine Floods its self heavily

Hi Guys i have a TPI 5.7 1987 running on Speed Density with a MAP system.

Once it starts if you dont rev it hard it will stall and heavily flood itself..

When reving the engine a lot of brown smoke comes out exhausts..

I have tried....New ECM, MAP sensor,Temp Sensor, Plugs, Leads, Dis Cap,
Ignition Module, Checked Injectors with Noid and impedance, Checked Fuel Regulator, Fresh Fuel, Good Battery Voltage, New Oil due to Fuel running into it after bad flooding....

As you can imagine this is really getting annoying now...

I am no Pro at this and really could do with some advice...

Any help greatly appreciated..

Paul

IAC might not be working properly. I had the same problem and my car would sputter and once I get it to run black crap spew out of the exhaust. We took the IAC out and I screwed it in a bit and hooked it back up, car started up fine.

What is your fuel pressure at? Also, when you checked the fuel pressure regulator, did you check to see if fuel is leaking through it? If there's fuel in the vacuum line to it, that would be a clue. Also, does it hold fuel pressure after the engine is off? If not, that could indicate a leaking injector. When you changed from MAF to SD, what did you do with the cold start injector? I assume it's removed and blocked off.

Re: Engine Floods its self heavily

I have not measured the fuel only tried pushing the small valve in on rail this did not seem to have much pressure just drippled out but the engine had not run for a couple of days..
I removed the regulator because somebody told me it may be perforated so i thought i would replace it with an adjustable one so i can play with that also..I did not notice fuelin the vacuum line but it did smell slightly, i thought this might me expected due to it right next to fuel.
The SD setup was already done when i bought this in 1995 the cold start is disconnected but still there and always has been.
The O2 is there but has never been connected i have no idea if its turned off in ecm or not? i have tried connecting it back up to the ecm i ran a new wire as the original one was cut off back at loom, that made no difference but i realise the O2 does not make any difference untill engine warms up and this problem is happening from cold.
I have worried about the injectors being faulty but it does seem to get wet in all cylinders at once? unless im unlucky 8 times at once..

Thank you for your help,.

Well, the quickest way to check for leaking injectors is to see if the system holds fuel pressure. You'll need a fuel pressure gauge, which you can pick up at any auto parts store, shouldn't be more than 30 or 40 bucks. Connect it to the puel pressure test port on the passenger fuel rail, and then turn the key to "on" (don't start the engine). Pressure should be around 43-44PSI. Leave the gauge connected, and turn the key back off. The fuel pressure should stay where it was, and not fall quickly. If it does fall quickly, then one of the injectors (could even be the cold start injector) is leaking fuel into the intake.

You are correct that the O2 sensor isn't needed until the car warms up, but it should throw a code once it tries to read from it. The only way I know of to disable this in the ECM, is to disable closed loop mode entirely, which I don't think anyone would do. Do you get a check engine light at all?

Re: Engine Floods its self heavily

Hi Ward,i will look at getting a fuel pressure tester and try that..thanks..
The engine light hs been on showed allsorts of problemsbut i think that is because i unplugged all sensors to check leads etc...Once i reset the ecm i checked again after engine run..It showed a Knock sensor but i put this down to loud pipes or down to its poor running condition.
The cold start injector has never been used will it suddenly open and cause the problem?
The engine is in an astro van and im not sure how the fuel lines are?
Could this maybe a fault? although it has run okay on and off for 12 years.

Thanks

Re: Engine Floods its self heavily

If the cold start injector isn't plugged in, then it can't fire, but it could still be leaking fuel into the intake. I guess it's possible that the fuel return line could be clogged, which would increase the fuel pressure and make it run rich, but I don't think that's very likely.
