If a get a lopey cam on my 305 tpi will it affect my power accesseries???

I was told if a get a cam with a rough idle it won't provide enough amperage to run my power accessories like steering brakes, ids this true????

It will have nothing to to with amperage. If the car idles fast enough, the alternator will be able to charge the battery and run the accessories.

It can affect your brakes by not producing enough vacuum to the master cylinder and effect fuel delivery to the fuel pressure regulator.

You will run into so many computer/driveability issues with a lumpy cam in a TPI that how to operate your brakes will be the last thing on your mind. I've seen power brakes work on cars making 10-12" of vacuum in neutral (which also comes with a very radical idle), so really you should be more worried about how you're gonna run an engine w/ a lumpy cam. Big time PROM burning fun...

I agree, Ed.

When asked, I always try to recommend a shorter duration camshaft for TPI engines, especially the L98 with it's restricted intake system.

But, I always run into the "Bigger is Better" mentality and most guys want to stick a bigger stick in it.

I'm in the process of building a 434 for a friend and you wouldn't BELIEVE the arguments we've had over camshaft duration.

Even after running Engine Analyzer Pro (that $500+ engine simulation program) a zillion times and finding that a bigger cam makes only slightly more top end while giving up a ton down low, Steve still wants BIG.

Know what he ordered? First he bought a 244/250 on 112s, then, without even putting it in the block, bought an even bigger one. 250/256 @ .050 on 106 lobe centers and installed at 100. I'm betting it's going to be a REAL DOG around town.
