383 tpi????????????????????

ok guys ive found a 383 and the guy is willing to let it go pretty cheaply so im deffaintly considering it but my main concern is that its carbed and if i put that in i get rid my computer and have to do alot of mods which im not smart enuff to do lol so i was wondering if i can use my tpi setup or upgrade some parts of it like the a bigger throttle body and aftermarket runners would it bolt up to the 383 and would puttin tpi on it make it perform less and ill get more horsepower keeping the carb or what??

You did not say if you had a 305 or 350. A TPI will work with a 383 many of us are doing it just make sure the cam is computer friendly. You will also have to help it breath a little better on both end headers cat back. The TPI I would suggest at least doing all the free mods porting plenum removal of MAFS screens .You will also need an AFPR and if it’s a 305 I would try to get a set of 24lb injectors if it’s a 350 boosting the fuel pressure may get you buy. I f you can spend the money I would get a set of after market runners and TB and a K&N air filter. One thing you will definitely have to do is get a custom made chip if you just want to get it in their and drive it the chip and fuel pressure reg along with the free porting will get you buy until you have the cash for the rest but the car will definitely not run at its full potential.

I have a Hot Rod mag from '86 that I found laying around and in it they built a 383tpi setup. As far as intake, the stock tpi system WILL choke it big time. With the stock tpi system/heads on the car they ran a 15 second quarter. Im not sure how much $$ it will cost to have your stock tpi ported out to make it perform well, but if it gets high you might as well go mini-ram. This setup is far superior anyway and may cost only a little more.
Dont forget that it may not be a bad idea to stick with the carb. Its not as much work as you might think, and you wont have to deal with a wimpy cam or custom prom to make the computer happy. Sometimes low tech may be better.
just food for thought

carb may be easier but something about the way a tpi sounds and looks just gets to me.so im going to try my hardest to keep my tpi.a mini ram would be excellent its to bad the whole setup is like almost 2 g's unless somebody out there has a used one =) lemme know.if i dont get a mini ram im gonna get those slp runners that have the runners connected and port match out of the plenum and slap a aftermarket intake on there and lastly a 58 mill throttle body....you think ill be alright if i do that instead of buying a miniram???

The runners will help, but headers and some porting of the intake should be done. And if you plan on running a cam large enough for your 383 to make some power, plan on a custom chip. It will probably still be cheaper than the miniram, and the results will probably be pretty good. You may want to try looking around the boards and see what the guys running 383tpi setups have done, and what their results are.
Good luck

This is what I have 406 with fastburn heads hot cam with 1.6 roller rockers My uncle has a 400 stroked to a 432 I think thats wright thet both have the same heads but the 432 has a small base cam for clearnce the only major problem we had was not having a good base so we had to port a stock base and then modify it to woork with the heads we both used slo runners and 52mm TB I used 24lb injecters and he used 36lb we port mached the plenums to the slp runner. the chip he used was a custom burn not positve on who did it Me I have bought the stuff to burn my own and still have a few bugs to work out. Before I got the 400 I was going to do a 383.I was going to use a min ram but after looking in to it I found a lot of tpi cars with 383s and using the TPI with all the bolt ons .So I kept it.
