Please help... Intermittent problem! 34, 42, 44
Got these codes last week- 34, 42, 44(along with the car running like crap), so last Sunday I replaced the MAF power relay, pickup coil, and oxygen sensor. I also repaired the EST connector wire- which had a couple small cuts in it. Ran the car for almost a week- Hurray! seems like the problem went away. Then today it started this thing again. Really hard to start, then when it does, it runs like it's on 7 cyl. or even worse- and almost dies @ idle. Funny thing, though; if you start the car, then shut it off, and do that a few more times, it starts fine, and runs fine ( problem goes away for a while). Would this be the ignition module? I always get the 3 codes at the same time. It can't be actually running on 7 cyl's because even when the SES light is on, it still has lots of power. I would've replaced the MAF burnoff module last Sunday, but the LORDCO guy said there was no listing for one (small town). This is not long after a peanut cam swap- but the problem is so intermittent that it can't be the cam. I also checked everything- vacuum lines, etc- I didn't miss anything that I can see. PLEASE HELP. my wife drives this car too and her patience is dwindling! Thanks in advance,
Jeff

positive you are getting good spark? Maybe a fuel injector is on its way out?

I WOULD RATHER PUSH A CAMARO THAN DRIVE AN IMPORT
1983Z28 350w/ edelbrock performer RPM power package , dynomax shorty headers, 700R-4 with shift kit, 750cfm carb, edelbrock 3" exhaust system, 16" IROC rims and ASCD SS hood.
future mods:
completely done over suspension, black paint with flames,
T-56 almost ready to go in, TPI swap coming up
Wifes new car:
95Z28, AT, leather, T-tops bone stock for now.
future mods:
header to tailpipe replacement and a cold air intake. Then I am just going to leave it alone

When my Turbo Started acting like that eventually the ECM craped itself out. It would throw a Code 42 than some others, when I got the Water injection code, which was programmed at the factory incase they decided to use it but not TTA was equiped with it, I knew that the ECM had craped out. Sure enough switched computers and everything is fine now, except for and extreemly high Idle.

Had almost exact problem with my camaro. Try replacing the MAF burnoff relay. Aftermarket parts stores do not generally list it. Not expensive at the dealer, typically about 20 bucks. Do not rule bad MAF sensor. Try GENTLY tapping on the module part of the sensor while the engine is running normally. If you get a stumble or stall the sensor is probably defective. BE SURE, they are real pricey. Does the engine crank excessively before it starts? If so you may have a bad fuel pump relay. This relay only operates when you first start the engine and fuel pressure is low. It runs for about 2 seconds to build pressure and then turns off. When engine starts the oil pressure sender has a secondary switch which sends 12 volts to the fuel pump. My buddy had an intermittent switch in the oil sender and it generated a similiar problem to yours. However, if you are getting 34 code I would look At MAF. Code for burnoff should be a 36 if I am not mistaken. Good Luck

one other way to test the MAF Sensor is just to unplug it, it sets the computer to a default mode where the engine will run fine but it will throw a code (cant remember which code)thats supposed to be a sure way from the GM service manual to test this.

in 88 the Burn off and power relays for the MAF were the same. i had the same problem with my car but the numbers matched on the old relays so they are the same thing. just buy another power relay for the burnoff one.

34-MAF sensor frequency or voltage is low (OR) MAP signal voltage is low (OR) Pressure sensor circuit signal voltage is too high
42-Electronic Spark Timing circuit open or shorted to ground (OR) Direct Ignition System fault - bypass circuit open or shorted to ground (OR) Fuel cutoff relay circuit open or shorted to ground
44-Lean Exhaust indication-O2 sensor voltage stays low after one or two minutes of engine run (Left sensor on dual sensor engine)
That's what my code book says.
