I was wanting to change out my prom for two reasons, I just swapped from a auto to a 5spd and wanted to get rid of my c/s injector. I figured if I get one of the SLP proms for $69 on clearance (same price as a dealer stock chip here) for a 89, it will will cure both my problems and they state they have made performance upgrades at WOT vs the stock chip.

Has anyone used a SLP chip with good results ?

TTT...

Would an 87-88 PROM work in my 86 Iroc TPI setup? It's all stock parts, just swapped into an 86 Monte SS.

I want to upgrade b/c I went w/ a five speed & I have an auto PROM right now.

I have never used an SLP chip, but to the other question I believe an87-88 chip would improve things but Im not sure, you could do a search on this board to see, Im sure someone else has discussed that and it improved it.

hope that helps

The SLP/Jet/Hypertech chips work, but if I had my choice I'd stick with the good Ol GM memcal/chip. If you do any prom tuning at all you'll notice that the difference between the proms is slim to none. But in the situation your in right now its a toss up since the prices are about the same...

Thanks, I think I might try it. I've heard of people swaping the 86-88 proms with a 89 to delete the c/s injector, but I want some clarification before I try it. Here's a link to the page : slponline.com

BTW. What is the main difference bettween the auto/manual chips besides t/c lockup and shift idle control(5spd) ?

86, I ran an SLP PROM for years. Honestly, there was little if any performance improvement over stock in my case (stock except for headers, catback, and the cheap mods). The main reason I continued to use it was because it turned the fans on at a lower temperature.

My suggestion would be this. If you're never going to get into PROM burning, either one will work fine. If you do plan to try your hand at making your own, I'd go with the good old GM memcal since I think it's a better base upon which to create your own.

Ooops, I forgot to mention that the 89 chip is going to have VATS enabled... Unless you "disable" vats it won't let the injectors pulse.. So your going to need programming equipment either way..

If I can find a dealer around here any cheaper, I'll probably go with that (I haven't called around that much). I do plan on getting into prom burning, just haven't talked myself into investing in the equipment/software yet.

To answer your question, no you just cant plug an 89 chip into your 86 computer without modifying the programming somewhat.

You really need a custom chip, and buying the equipment to do it is a lot less than what some places are charging for their "custom" chips.

The actual chips themselves are different. The '89 PROM has more pins.

I had a SLP chip and it helped a little bit.

The chips are NOT different. 86-89 are identical. 90-92 gets into SD which are different.

I run an 89 calpak with custom ARAP programming in my 86 computer.

So, the 89 chip would work if I disabled VATS. I guess now is a good time as any to get into prom programming. I've heard some good things about the ARAP bin and like to try it out. Would I see a power increase with a custom chip or just drivabililty issues? I've never seen anyone with dyno results before/after they installed a custom chip and I guess the results vary depending on how badly you need one.
