Long Tubes + HOT cam
Who here runs the HOT cam with long tubes? What are your times and mph's? How is the low end? Just out of curiosity, has anyone tried the HOT cam with a mini-ram?

I am running a set of completely stock (unported) runners, but the plenum and Edelbrock base are ported.. The cam is very flat until around 3000 rpm, then it screams. The upper rpm's could be better, so I plan on a mini-ram in the future, but for now it runs pretty good. I would imagine that a set of larger aftermarket runners would run much better than what I have now, but it would be a waste of money for me to try them, then change to a mini-ram soon after. I ran a 2:77 gear set in the car for well over a year and a half and was running 13.4 @ 105 most of the runs. I recently changed to a 3:70 gear set and aside from not being able to shift the car at high rpm's, I ran 13.7 @ 108.78 ... I know the car will run 12.? when I figure out the transmission problem. Also, all of my runs have been in the upper 90 degrees to 105 or so, so there is some more to consider. All in all, I like the hot cam, I drive the car every day, it gets 28-29 miles per gallon on the freeway (I know it is hard to believe) and will pass California smog with a new cat. I have driven a car with the TPIS ZZ-9 cam, AFR 190 heads, and a mini ram with a 6-speed and 4:11 gears, that is an awesome set-up!! If I had it to do again, I would most likely copy that engine, it is much smoother feeling than mine, just as much, if not more power, just smooth, but if you like the old school, slam you back in the seat feeling, my car would be it.

Kevin... I need to get ahold of you about the chip. I am getting a ton of detonation if the car is anything over 170-180 degrees and I am under power. I have the base timing at 8* and plan to put it back to 6 tonight, but I doubt it will solve the problem, it seems pretty bad. Is there anything you can suggest? I don't know if you and your dad still have my diacom runs from the track a few months ago... maybe that can tell you something? I know I was getting 40 degrees total advance at times with the base at 8, and I was detonating each time I shifted.... It never seems to go easy with this car.. Hopefully my 69 Camaro will be without headache! Feel free to e-mail me if you want. Thanks....

I forgot to mention, Tom Keliher also runs the LT-4 Hot Cam and LTRs.I am almost positive he is running the Accel large tube runners and an Accel base. His car seems to run -very- strong, and also passed California smog, try getting ahold of him through www.sc3gfb.org/ He can be of great help..
Here is his engine.. hopefully he won't mind me posting it 8^)

You guys are running pretty fast for using a short runner cam in your long runner cars. Is there anybody out there who bought the HOT cam and hates it? There was a guy who dynoed his car a while back and said his torque curve looked like a triangle. I think that has a negative connotation.

Yeah, I was the one with the triangle torque curve. The graphs still in the sig if you want to see. I figured out afterwards that my fuel pressure was set way low which was part of the problem, and that I was getting tons of knock retard due to the stock chip. I almost have this thing reprogrammed finally, and hopefully I'll get a chance to dyno it again soon.
But I still like the cam regardless.

My setup is pretty much identical to Scott 88 GTA's. I'm going to get the AS&M siamesed runners then my setup should be complete. I like how the Hot cam pulls up high, it also makes a lot of torque down low. If I had to do it again though I would have gotten the ZZ4 cam or AFR 190's. But I guess I should wait until I get the new AS&M runners on.
