getting code 24 vehichle speed sensor

getting code 24 vehichle speed sensor
speedometer and odometer don't work at all. just travelled 1500 miles without them working. what else to check besides sensor and its wires? speedometer cable? thanks for any info.

Really need to know what year and type of engine to give all the possiblities.
For mechanical speedo
Drive gear (in trans)
Driven gear
Speedo cable
It should not be the VSS since in this scenario we know the speedo is not turning and the VSS is mounted to the speedo
For electronic speedo
The VSS in the trans
the buffer
the ECM (later TPI)
