i just remonved my airbox to remove the sreen, i discovered that the sensor was not hooked up but the car has run fine. When i hooked it up the car ran like ****. It did not want to idle and was not responsive at all. and should i remove both screens on my 89 formula 305tpi
were u throwing a SES light?

Once the car remaps itself then it'ss run fine without the MAF hooked up. If it's pluged in and runs like crap than it's time for a new MAF. And don't be fooled, sometimes a busted MAF wont throw a SES.
since the MAF was in the airstream, but not electrically connected, it's probably got a thick layer of crud coating the hot-wire. i don't know of a real safe way to manually clean the wire, but you might try starting the engine and then shutting down after a 1 minute. do this several times, and maybe the burn-off function(which keeps a connected hot-wire clean) will clear some of the crud off.
also, disconnect the battery for 10 minutes. this will clear any codes and set the BLM's and INT's back to base. that way when the ECM relearns, it will be compensating for a dirty MAF, not a missing MAF.
you might also want to:
check the output from your TPS,
check the IAC for cleanliness and pintle preset and,
if all else fails, try adjusting the idle screw to stabilize the idle
btw, once you've removed one screen, you might as well remove the other

The car runs fine with it unhooked, the mas wire looks fine, but if it runs fine without it plugged up should i leave it unplugged or will this cause problems. Ive had the car 9 months and got the car after he engine was built. So it has been uplugge for that long and ive had no promblems out of it.It is throwing the ses light though
