Setting timing with painless harness...

My buddy has a '77 Camaro with an '87 Tpi in it. He used a pianless wiring harness to install it. How can we figure out which wire needs to be disconceted to set the timing? The tech artical defines it by color, but painless wires are all black with writing on them. WHat is the correct name of this wire, or where does it lead to?

Ps. The engine is the GMPP 350 h.o. with 300 horse power (from befor they started using the vortec heads.) its one step down from the ZZ4. What would be a good place to set the timing at?

What???? How old is this harness? All the ones I have seen are color coded just like the factory stuff. I can see having a hard time finding the right wire if thats the case.
It runs from the distributor to a specific pin on the ecm. I dont have the information handy but can get it if someone else doesnt have it for you. Its a single wire, and should have a weatherpack connector about 6-8" from the ecm if its anything like the painless harness I have.

The wires have writing on them like "battery" or "injector 1" so the aren't completely black. Do you know where it runs to on the distributor? thanks

If they used GM terminology, it may be labled as EST Bypass, or similar.

Like Mike said, it's prolly called EST bypass or something, and it will be one of the 4 wires that run into the distributor (on the computer harness obviously, not the power/tach wires, etc)
