Finally, new TPI build w/pics

At long last the project is almost finished.

I started out with a Procharged stock TPI, lowered to 8:1 compression with 15lbs boost. Stock heads, stock intake pieces, forged pistons. The supercharger grenaded and dumped its internals into my oil pan and pretty much destroyed everything from crank to roller rockers in the heads and everything in between. Since then, I've bought and sold parts, got divorced, sold a house, etc. etc. but we turned the key on her today and she fired right up. Needs tuned and a few minor things but is just about finished.

New build specs:

355 w/forged Speed Pro pistons, stock rods, cast crank. 9.6:1 CR
AFR 180cc Street Eliminator Heads
Fully ported and port matched stock TPI base, ported/matched SLP runners and ported/siamesed plenum. Stock 48mm Throttlebody w/airfoil.
JET AFPR
30# injectors
Comp Cams CS XR276HR-12 , .536/.544 w/ Crane 1.6 roller rockers, 224/230 duration @.050
EGR, A/C and Smog delete
MAC 1 5/8" headers
cat delete, manual cut out
Mufflex 4" exhaust, Flowmaster 40 series race muffler
Built 700r4 w/2400 stall
3.70 gear 9 bolt

A few things that aren't ideal, such as the stock ported base and old rusty headers will be addressed this winter. It's been two years since the car ran so I was anxious to get it back on the road for summer time.

The desktop dyno estimates around 380 horse/460 torque (flywheel), any input how close this might be?

Got the first dyno numbers today. Extremely happy.

300 (exactly) whp, 332wtq, converter UNLOCKED. Before I take delivery in the next day or two, we're going to try locking the coverter up for a pull, as it's not responding to the order to lock at WOT through the chip.

Re: Finally, new TPI build w/pics

Here's the graph!

Also picked up 8 more tq.

The blue line is the current build, redline is two years ago with a supercharger and stock TPI/stock heads.

All the lines are actually solid, the bitmap to jpeg conversion and downgrade to upload here kind of screws it up. but you get the idea.

Who tuned your PROM? There may be more power to be had with more tuning.

Nice job though!!

Re: Finally, new TPI build w/pics

My guy at Precision is doing the tuning. They've tried to address the dip in A/F when you first hit it, but have had limited success. They don't have much experience with TPI tuning, but they are very good. When the car was first dynoed it only put 230hp to the wheels, so their tuning gained 70+ whp so far. That said, these are unlocked converter numbers, and we believe there's still an issue with the ECM as altering timing through the chip is not working. The graph run was with 32* total timing, locked through the distributer. Once we get the ECM worked out they'll tweak it a bit more and then do a final pull with a locked converter.

Re: Finally, new TPI build w/pics

Tell them to add 5 - 10 % in the accel enrichment table. That should take care of lean tip in when you hit the throttle.

Re: Finally, new TPI build w/pics

not bad, its more like 320whp locked or even more. Thats a solid build, i'd say desktop dyno was pretty close on this one

Re: Finally, new TPI build w/pics

I'm very happy so far, even though I know dyno #s are just a tool for tuning really since so many things can impact the number (at one point they put 17psi in my tires since they were low and picked up 12rwhp, lol). I'm very anxious to see what it will do at the track with some drag radials.

I'm glad I didn't go with an aftermarket base, not saying it wouldn't have made an improvement, but I think this is great power on what I have. I debated alot with buying one and in the end figured it wouldn't make enough of a difference to justify the $400+ price tag. Plus I think I'd like to try the new BBK intake (if it ever comes out) down the road.
