WHAT!!!!
the MAF just for SMOG, get a new mechanic. The MAF tells the computer dow much air in entering the engine and the computer then adds fuel accordingly

HAHHAHHAHHAHHAHA... (like camaro6spd said) do NOT go back to that mechanic, he obviously knows NOTHING about computer controlled cars. Your MAF may or may not be the problem, give us some more details on whats going on with your car.

IF it runs better without it, then there is certainly something wrong. Does it set a code? (with it unplugged, it should leave the SES lite on solid.)

Um... I don't think so. Have you checked your fuel mileage since it has been unplugged? Have you looked at the plugs? Is your oxygen sensor trashed yet?

You really need to find the solutions to the two problems you have:
* Fisrt, scan the ECM for error codes. That should provide some information about the problem. If your "mechanic" disputes the idea that the MAF is a necessary sensor for more than just emissions control, ask to see his ASE certification;

* Second, start asking around for a mechanic that actually has some skill with fuel systems. There are a lot of "mechanics" that are very good with chassis problems, general engine and exhaust work, and maybe even some electrical problems, but are clueless when it comes to fuel systems. Damn! After all, these systems are almost 17 years old! Apparently, your "mechanic" hasn't been staying even close to current with automotive technology, and shouldn't be making such sweeping statements without having a little more information.

YES, YOU NEED THE MAF!!!!!!! Never and I mean NEVER go back to that mechanic! If you car is running better without the MAF plugged in then there is a big problem. Plug the MAF back in and then let use know what is going on. WE, not that mechanic (and it hearst me to call someone like that a mechanic), will help you out.

So should I go and get a new maf or should I keep my eyes peeled on the board for a good used one? By the way I don't have a scanner, but I think now im going to invest in one.
Thanks alot fellas!

Before you replace the mas you need to plug it back in un hook the baterry clear all the codes take it to the first wall mart or auto zone pepboys what ever by the time you arive the codes will be back buy a cheap gm code breaker from one of the places above for $20 or spen $200 for a cheap scan tool on line then check the codes it will tell you how to do it. You will probly have three codes if the problem is being coused by the mas one will be the mas one will be the mas burn off relay and the last will be mas power relay the to relays are only 10 for the burn off 15 for power and they are next to the fuel pump relay so instead of trying to determin wich one is the fuel and with is the burn off you may want to just change them both if this does not clear those codes then break out 180 for a reman mas at auto zone. I have had these codes three times and have only replaced the mas once the other two time it was one of the realays.

Instead of a "cheap" $20.00 code scanner, I'll sell you one for $5.00 plus postage. Or you can go out and find your own for next to nothing.

The kind I sell looks amazingly like a regular paper clip cut in half, but WE all know it as a "G.M. Stored Diagnostic Trouble Code Retrieval Device". Call it whatever you want, I'd be glad to mail one to you for five bucks.

If you decline, I'll make you read the following file to get the error code definitions on your own:

GM Error Code.pdf

You'll need Adobe Acrobat Reader to view/print the file (see below).
