Do I NEED a new chip for this?

Hi,

I'm still busy on this conversion from TBI to a 350 TPI. I want to know if a stock chip will work fine with only these "mods":

SLP 1 3/4 Headers
Dual Cats
American Thunder catback
3.42's

My thought is yes, but I want to make certain. I will begin modding the 350 later, and for that I want to burn my own chips, but right now I will need to drive my car 300 miles from where I'm doing the swap (my Dad's), and want to make sure a stock chip is fine.

Thanks.

If you are swapping from a TBI to a TPI you will need a whole new computer and wiring harness.
A stock chip from a TPI car will work fine for now in a TPI computer. Id doesnt matter wheter its a 305 or 350 computer they will both work on what you have. Though you have to figure out whether or not you need a MAF system or Speed Density.

Past Thirdgen:
86 Trans Am w/ built 355TPI with SLP goodies and too much other stuff to List. One sweet *** car, wish I would have had a good enough Job to pay insurance on three cars so I could keep it, but for a 89 Turbo Trans Am w/ Low miles, I think I made the right choice!

Thanks for the reply.

I'm going SD. I already have a new GM SD harness, and a 730 SD ECM. I just want to make sure that a stock 730 350 TPI chip will be fine with the above "mods" for a long drive home until I start burning my own chips.

Even with alot of mods like the cam, throttle body, etc the stock chip will still work. The car will start, the car will run fine and you could run it for the life of the engine on the stock chip. But to get the maximum peformance out of any mods like that then yes you would need a new chip.

Hi 86TpiTransAm, thanks for the reply. I will defintely be burning my own proms once I get the car back home, I just wanted to make sure I could safely and reliably drive the car back to my house from my Father's (where I'm doing the swap) on a stock memcal. Once I'm here I will begin buying the equipment to do the burning, etc.
