car will not start

ok i completed the motor/tranny swap from the 85. i had the engine running on the engine stand with a carb so i know everything internally is fine. i have spark, compression, and fuel(plugs were wet) but it wont fire. i think that the plugs may have fouled because for some odd reason it was 180 out, so i turned it back around and it did the same thing, not start, you could hear a little noise from the exhaust like it was trying but that was it. i adjusted the timing between 6* all the way to 10*, 8* seemed like it was promising ,but nothing. tomorrow i will change the plugs to some new ones just in case. i had this same probelm wheni first built this motor, hard time getting it to run at first. is there anything i should check? oh yeah i did disconnect the brown-black stripe wire when i set the timing.

Hey dude,
Sorry I don't have the answer for ya, but I do have a question - A few weeks ago, did you have a blue IROC w/cowl hood and hi rise spoiler cruise by you? Also, I think we've talked one time a while ago - I also have white racing stripes. Either way, we gotta run em! :0) What all do you have done?

How are you checking for spark? Wire to a ground? How is your fuel pressure? Are you using a carb or tpi? What happens when you turn the key?

i have this tool that i hook one of the wires to and ground it on the car and it simulates the plug when i turn the key. i can see the spark jump. fuel pressure is about 48, andi know its getting gas because i can pull one of the plugs and it is wet with gas. this is the tpi setup on my 89.

ok i just put brand spanking new delco r45ts' in and when i first turned it over it acted like it was going to start but once again it didnt. everything still checks out: spark, fuel, good compression. timing is set at about 8* i keep moving it hoping that it will start but nothing. anyone?

I know that this has nothing to do with the subject but what does it mean when people type ttt. I have seen it and many other abreviations. I usually can figure out what they mean but I keep seeing this and wondering what it means.

Is the motor grounded? I forgot to hook up a ground strap before and got same results. Some thing so simple could be missed. Good luck.

i did the same thing when i took my intake off
i'm pretty sure your dist is off 180 degrees and you are trying to fire the cylinders on the intake stroke and not the power stroke
try that if its not a grounding problem

Hmmn, how can you set the timing to any known degree, without the engine running, other than at TDC and "0"?

I'd recheck the plug wire routing based on #1 being at TDC. If it's correct and you have the rotor fairly close to the #1 plug terminal (slightly before it), it should be good enough to fire up with the ECM control.

Is the setup an '86 TPI setup?

no the distrubutor is not 180 i have checked it about 10 times in the last 2 days, and i just checked it before i left my friends house. i had a timing light on it when i was cranking it and i made a guesstimate on the degree from what i could see. i am pretty sure i hooked up all the grounds(5 i beleive)on the back of both heads but i will double check them. i have checked, double checked, and tripple checked the distributor, plug wires on the cap. if i left a ground wire off would i still be getting spark on the wires? my friends truck had a problem like this and it ended up being his coolant temp sensor or something like that, but i wouldnt think that would have too much of an effect on it starting. or would it?
EDIT: the ECM/harness/all sensors are from the 89

If the plug wires are all correct and you're getting good spark, it's seem you're dumping too much in.

The CTS, MAF and TPS all are used at startup for fuel.

Re: The grounds, did you hook us the small braided cable from the pass side (intake or head??) to the firewall?
