Re: Goin to the Dyno....

if you guys have problems keep it to PMs and not on the board

Any suggestions as far as Advancing/Retarding the cam with respects to the HSR and the drivability. Most cams have 4' of advancement already.... Does the HSR loose lots of low end torque? Opinions.... I don't wanna do this again anytime soon.
Naw, the HSR does well. it has a bit of low end loss but its not much at all. My L98 still put down 315 at the wheels, thats only bolt ons. My 383 HSR now has tons of torque haha, you actually want some low end gone just to hook.

I'd install the cam straight up, aka 112 centerline. that cam is not huge by anymeans and with HSR you'll want to keep it more on the retarded side to keep the top end up. HSR loves the upper rpms. You'll still have plenty of torque with that duration

That would explain a couple of things though wouldn't it...!!!!

It would explain why my peak hp was @ 3700 RPM !!!!! I always thought this car under-performed. Don't get me wrong, I like the extra displacement now that I know that I have it, but that cam really held me back!!! But it did put down 198hp/293tq which I would suppose is decent all things considered.

I'm sure that the new combo will really wake this car up now!!! I can't wait!!!
I had a very similar combo in my full size van minus the TPI. It was a stock GM Goodwrench 350 TBI for a 8,600+ GVW vehicle, which has "810" (HD 193s) swirl ports, peanut roller camshaft, and a sickly 8.75:1 compression. I ran it with an edelbrock 3704 TBI intake and a stock TBI unit. It even had the stock cast iron exhaust manifolds and stock 2 1/4" to 3" single Y-pipe. High flow 3" cat and a single in dual out 40 series flowmaster into dual 2 1/2" tail pipes.

I took the same engine, added a pair of ported Vortec heads, a stock LT4 roller cam, 1.6:1 rockers, Doug Thorley Tri-Y headers, Port matched Mercruiser Vortec-TBI intake, and a 2" TBI from a Marine 350.

Re: Goin to the Dyno....

Thanks Fast355, Looks like we're talking about the same equipment here.

I appreciate the dyno sheets for sake of comparison.
I can't wait to run this thing back on the rollers!!!! I'm very curious to see what it runs.

Re: Goin to the Dyno....

Well after a couple dozen different headaches and 11 weeks this job is finally comin to an end.

First off I'd just like to thank all the different people that have helped me out along the way. The help has been invaluable

There were many forks in the road sorta speak like the engine coming out for one, but at least I have my own lift now.... It'll come in handy when this 357" grows up a little more

The car started last week but the dowel pin on the cam was sticking out too far and was hitting the timing chain cover So I ended up taking the cover back off and fixed it!!!!! What a pain in the ..... So now I just have to get my hood to fit at this point.....

I'll be getting back to the dyno soon I guess.... that's what this was all about, and hopefully getting out to the strip before it's too late in the season

But I'll have to spend time with the family first I haven't had to sleep on the couch yet.

Re: Goin to the Dyno....

Well the hoods been cut to fit the HSR and I've been working some of the bugs out of it and have a appointment @ the dyno next week on Sept 23rd.

The car stumbes from idle till 2000rpm until it's completely warmed up. But holy s**t does it come alive from 3000 past 6000!!!

I ZINGED past 6200 RPM last nite and it was still pulling!!!! It's a relatively tame cam 262/270 duration (211/219) & .536/.560" lift, but wow! Did it ever wake up with the 180 AFR heads

Re: Goin to the Dyno....

Well the long awaited dyno #'s are in!!!!!!!
And I couldn't be happier!!!!
I was running very lean and need to do some tuning in the worst way, therefore I only did one pull.

Next spring I'll have new injectors and start to datalog and tune this thing, but for now I guess it will go back into the garage hmmmm.....

So here it is...... What do ya guys think?

330 Hp @ 5300
349 Ft/Lbs @ 4600

I'll be posting the run on Youtube and will post the link when it's uploaded

Re: Goin to the Dyno....

Thanks for bringing this back up. Your first setup is similar to what I have in my car. Reman GM block with 810 heads, and TPI intake. Was your cam a flat tappet, or roller?

Fast355, was your cam a flat or roller?

Re: Goin to the Dyno....

Thanks guys....!

Dale, the first cam was a roller 305 peanut cam....179/194 duration with .350/.384" lift (not very impressive) The cam was stock in 1987 305's with automatic transmissions & it looks like GM was throwing them into their remanufactured engines as well......

Don't get me wrong, it was fun to drive! and made loads of torque where you could play with it. I thought that 293Ft/Lbs @3100 Rpm was decent, it just fell off too quickly.....

Brian Wall, the owner/operator of the shop (Walls Rod and Custom) thought that I had put together a pretty good combo of well matched equipment, but we all know that there's more to be had......

I told him that I got alot of information & help right here on THIRDGEN.ORG!!!

He suggested going with larger injectors...32Lbs....? I was gonna get some 24Lbs Bosch Deesign III from Fuel Injector Connection this winter anyway... but may go larger now.....?

I was running like 18.5:1 A/F ratio @ part throttle and like 15.1 @ WOT I was gonna see if I could change things with tuning first, But I have lots to learn.

Any insights????

Re: Goin to the Dyno....

You need more then 24lbs. I ran some numbers and it looks like you need 28'ish. Maybe 30's.(if you plan to do more later).

If thats the cam I have, it works fine for me. I hardly run my motor past 35-3700rpms. Just no need to.. No space to either. I just wish it was a roller cam.

Re: Goin to the Dyno....

There are people making close to 400 at the wheels with 24lb SVO's.....

What he needs is PROM tuning.

For now, just bump the fuel pressure up 2 psi until you can tune the PROM correctly.
