timing chain replacement on 305 tpi

searched on this topic but didn't find anything. i want to replace my timing chain and have two questions:

1. do i need to lower my oil pan to remove the timing cover?
2. for a moderately skilled hobbyist, is this a really difficult job to do in your driveway (even with pullers) and should be left to a mechanic, or is it not as bad as it looks? the only reason I consider doing it myself is to save the cost of my mechanic doing it. it looks like it would take me a couple weekends to do the job right. any feedback from guys who have done this job is helpful.

thanks.

You don't need to drop the oil pan. It's not a bad job if you have basic hand tools, a harmonic balancer puller/installer, and some patience. The worst parts will be getting all the stuff out of the way and maybe getting the timing cover back over the oil pan. Use RTV on the oil pan seams and change the front seal while you're at it. It would be a 3-4hr job for me.
