305 TPI Question
305 TPI Question
My wife and I picked up an 88 IROC for ME to redo for HER!!!!
It has a 305 TPI engine (298,000 miles on it) that we would like to keep. My wife isn't into racing it or anything, just cruising it, so I figure a basic stok rebuild but would like to get a little more power out of it. What could I do to this engine, gasket match and smooth the runners, headers, edelbrock intake upgrade? It already has a K&N and a dual exhaust is a definate.
Thanks guys,
eric

Re: 305 TPI Question
Rebuilding the engine with 300,00 miles, will increase power. That is a roller block so up grading the cam would be easy during a rebuild. Rebuilding/upgrading the heads will increase power. I this a manuel or stick car? I understand the stick cars have decent cams in them, same as the 350 auto cars, now is a good time to confirm that and or fix it. Lots of little tings add up to. Double roller timing chain, roller rockers or roller tip, squaring the block, making the heads flat, good pistons. with all the other normal stuff on intakes and such. There is a post here with a guy getting like 347 rwhp with a 305.

Re: 305 TPI Question
You can buy a remanufactured 350 long block for about the same it costs to rebuild the 305 (and you'd save TONS of time) ... and you can swap over 95% of the parts. I think that would be your best move.
I'll bet you One Bazillion Dollars it's not a TPI, though!

Re: 305 TPI Question
The post I mentioned is still active. Go to the TPI posting board and about the 30th one down will say "356 WRHP TPI 310 build", I though it was 347...woops missed it by that much. I wish you had one bazillion dollars to lose. I test drove a 91, 305,T5, TA the other day and it had plenty of power even at 2,000 rpm's.

Re: 305 TPI Question
Did you check out his post? 356 RWHP is alot to me. The TQ curve is flat to 6000 RPM, over 300 RWTQ for many thousand RPM. The TQ peaks at 362 RWTQ or there about, whick agrees with what you said only more RPM range. Annything with 300 RWHP or TQ is a awsome street car which ever it has. He has the best of both worlds. Check out his post, He lists the parts in the motor.
